Question Bad vibrations coming from new trailer!

Howdy,

Well I just picked up a new equipment trailer today. It is a Corn Pro 18 footer 14,000 GVW bumper hitch. Has Dexter Torflex axles and 16" wheels and tires (Uniroyal I think).

Anyway after picking up the trailer I headed home. Had to drive around 150 miles. I noticed that once I got on the interstate up above 60 mph I started getting a terrible vibration. And the faster ya go the worse it gets. 45 mph and under the trailer is very smooth. This problem is occuring unladen by the way. Once or twice going down a hill I got it up to around 80 mph without any significant vibrations...

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Honestly I think the tires are out of balance. So I plan to have them balanced on Weds. But I am worried that balancing the tires may not fix the problem.

Any advice is greatly apperciated.

is it a light hitch weight type vibration where the trailer wants to jerk you from side to side?

Frosty...

No the trailer is stable. It is just a high frequency vibration in the up and down direction. Really feels like a out of balance tire to me. Or a tire with a bump on it.

not really sure....... Do you know what the hitch weight is of the trailer empty? Is the trailer running level with your setup???

Almost sounds like a ball mounted to low (which is unusual on a 4x4 Dodge ) or very little tongue weight which lets the trailer rock back and forth on it's suspension/ any play in the hitch setup etc.

I would definitely be calling Cornpro/ The dealer where you bought the trailer and tell them about the problem. It's definitely not right, shouldn't be doing that.

Get the tires balanced 1st!! They usually don't balance trailer tires, but yes they should be balanced!!! I had my new trailer tires checked and they were out by over 18oz. Boy what a differance in the ride.

I'm willing to bet it's out of balance trailer tires...
