How Much is Too Much?

At the end of this week i got a job hauling 150 round bales of hay weighing in at 800- no more than 900 lbs. I got a 32 foot flatbed gooseneck with tandom duals to use. This trailer will fit 17 bales total but should i haul this much with my 3/4 ton? Ive hauled lots of hay with this trailer but it has always been with an old 1 ton dually chevy 454. I know the engine will pull it but im worried about the rear end. I dont have overloads just the regular old springs. I was thinking of puting 12 on the bottom with 2 side by side going 6 back, and then stacking mabey 2 or 3 in the back stacked on top. Do any of you think this is too much or will it be all right? Im not new to hauling hay just worried about my non- dually truck handling the load. I've always hauled with a dually but now the dually isnt availble. That thing was a gas hog any way, about 4 mpg when loaded, and we were limited to about 45 mph to... Any insite would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris.

Re:How Much is Too Much?

I would have to say that it shouldn't be a problem. You are only talking 15k worth of hay. I doubt that the trailer weighs much more than 5k. You will be overloaded by DOT standards but as far as the capabillities of the truck, you should be fine. Haul away!

You should be fine with that weight. I used to haul 11-1800lbs bales all the time on my 6500lb tandem dual gooseneck. That comes out to 26,300lbs of trailer. That was pushin it but I could do it. It was all my old 02 1-ton 6-speed HO wanted, never could get out of 5 th.

Re:How Much is Too Much?

Ill post a picture of the load and ill tell yall how my truck compares to my friends dads 02 powerstroke automatic. We will be pulling almost identical trailers with the same amount of hay on each. The biggest hills around here are the over-passes, so there wont be any hill tests. It Should be fun. He's scared of all the smoke mine can make before the turbo spools up. I just smile and say isnt it great. ;D

i'm sure you'll outpull him. if they were both stock trucks i'd say that he'd beat you on acceleration from around 25mph to at least 60mph, but uphill pulling changes everything ;D

Tom

Re:How Much is Too Much?

Well that hay was alot heavier than i thought. I weighed the truck and trailer empty and it came out to 13 grand and some change. I started loading the bales up, i had 12 double stacked on the bottom and looked under the truck and my rear end was bottomed out all the way to the bump stops. So i took off the front 2 and stacked em on the back. Then i had about 4 or 5 inches till i hit the bump stops. I go to the truck stop and weigh the rig again and it comes to nearly 29000 lbs. Thats 15500 lbs of hay, or 1300lbs per bale. I had no trouble pulling the load, just had to really watch the idiots on the road. My buddies powerstroke pulled the load well, although i could out accelerate him everytime. His truck has a 65 hp chip. But he did alot better in the field we were hauling to. I got stuck everytime i went in to the field. He just put it into 4 low and went right along. We've hauled 101 so far and have about 80 or so left to haul. Just waiting on the rain to stop so we can get into the fields again. I can slip my clutch at will now. I gotta get that SB con -o i got from Don M. in my truck. Well gotta go, Chris
