anybody else going to Yukon/Alaska this spring

Wife and I are planning to head up through the interior of BC to Ft St John and then to Whitehorse and points northwest sometime after the first week or so of June. It all depends on when I get the first hay crop off which of course depends on the weather. Our daughter and son in law live at Whitehorse so will be spending some time there both going and returning. If you are on the road look for us with the TDR decal on the rear of the trailer. Plan on spending around 6 weeks and get back in time to do the second cut.

Wish I could tell you we were, but we had to call it off for another year. So, next year it is. Can't leave until July this year, so we are going to do three months in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Should be fun.

Kandgo, no, we haven't done that yet. Looked at it but decided to do the road route both ways, mainly due to cost. Would be a nice way to go though.

FiverBob, We did the cross Canada trip two summers ago, took 101 days and 23,000 klms. The maritime provinces are great during the summer with the moderate climate. We thouroghly enjoyed Newfoundland and the two weeks there was not long enough. We snagged a piece of iceberg off the coast of the norhtern peninsula and used it for drinks. Nothing like 10,000 year old ice. You will have a great time.

Everyone talks about how bad the Alaska Hiway is But there are parts of Interstate 5 in California that is rougher and have you ever driven from Biloxi Ms. to New Orleans ( that is a torture test for a fifth wheeler and they don't even have frost heaves to contend with

I don't know how true the rumor is, but I've heard most of the Alaska Hwy is paved now.

Rocks getting thrown onto your windshield are a problem up here. The gov't doesn't even make you buy a new windshield when you get a chip or crack in it because it's just a way of life up here. Heck, I've got 2 or 3 chips and a crack about 3 ft long in my windshield.

The ferries are pretty expensive from what I've read. All of these prices are one-way. You might just consider parking your truck/5th wheel in Haines and just taking the ferry to Juneau...besides, I'm not sure that there are roads big enough to turn around on w/ a 5th wheel there...hehehehe

Heck, while you're in the area, you might as well come to Anchorage...there are a bunch of DTR guys in this area! We'll show ya around and stuff!

Like Welder27 said, broken windshields are very common here. One trick I've seen people do is to tape bubble wrap over their headlights. Oncoming traffic can still see that you have lights on, you won't have broken lenses, and there's plenty of daylight in the summer here anyway.
I'll be in Denali for Memorial Day weekend (Teklanika R.) but if anyone else will be in the Mat-Su Valley or Anchorage, look up the AK folks.

Garnet Kid, I will be driving to Skagway around that time. I have a white 2001 reg cab, 4 wheel drive, will look for you. No trailer
or camper/shell. Usually just a load in the bed with a blue tarp thrown over it.
ALso Sirius satellite radio works all the way to Skagway, whitehorse, Haines, this is the furthest north I have been.
I drive up and back every year. I have only had 1 rock chip
over the last 5 years. Almost all of the highway is paved, except where they are doing road work. It just gets better every year.
Yukon has the best part of the highway, very nice shape and wide and straight, B.C. and the U.S. should take lessons from them! Bugs are bad at times, I have a piece of screen door screen hung in front of radiator.
There is a restruant/fuel stop where the north end of the Cassiar meets the Alaska highway, they make fresh bread every day, it is very good!

thanks 6cylinders, Good to hear that the roads are not that bad and we will look for you on the road, but I like Moose 10's suggestion of using bubble wrap over the lights. I am almost due for a windshield as I have had several dings fixed. It seems every time we go across the Rogers Pass to Calgary during the winter I get a stone bruise. I think they use 3/4 minus mixed with pit run to sand. We flew up to Whitehorse last October and are looking forward to the drive this time.

That's true...it will be daylight up here for about 18 hrs every day during the summer, so you won't need your headlights for seeing where you're going.

-And we like it that way! Just kidding.

Actually there are several campgrounds here. The one on Mendenhall Lake is real nice and quiet.
