Any way to identify trailer axle ratings by looking at them?

You can get an idea of what the springs are rated at by counting the leafs, span, leaf thickness and width. Check out champion trailer site and compair numbers.

Well the trailer/hitch/axles/wheels/tires all held up GREAT on the trip, thanks for all the advice! Only had one sway incident where the trailer tried to come around on me, I thought I was seriously going to die. Had an F-250 extended cab long bed diesel on the trailer, and that thing was whipping side-to-side. I think my life flashed before my eyes

Wow, that must have been scary, just a push of the brake controller and it should have straightend out. Oh yeah forgot to update, I have dexter axles on my trailer and what I found was on the passanger side of the axle, their is a tin metal band around the axle with the listing of weight capacity and ID number. With the amount of dirt on it I only found it after crawling under the trailer.
