Hi all,
I just replaced the rear BFG 285/75R16's with Toyo ATs on my 2002 Dodge.
I am towing a 6000 lb travel trailer from home to our rv lot in British Columbia.
The data in the Travel Inflation Chart that comes with the owner's manual indicates that an OEM 265/75R16 should be inflated to 70 psi with a full load. This is what I inflated the BFG 285/75R16's to when I pulled the trailer.
Now, the max cold inflation pressure for a Toyo 285/75R16 is 65 psi.
Now, am I making something out of nothing by doing this comparison?
That is, the max psi rating of the two different tires is not an issue.
The tire tech who install the tires said to run the Toyo's at 65 psi, and when they warm up they would be running at 70 psi.

I run 60 psi in the fronts and 50 in the rears while empty, when I pull my trailer I go 60 all around. This is my second set of Toyos, the first set were 325/60/18s and I ran them the same.

The E rated tires I have now are far superior for towing than the C rated tires were, feels more stable and the narrower tires do not grab all the ruts. Also the 285/75/18s are just shy of 35" tall, so now in 3rd, I am at 55mph@2000rpm. It tows fantastic.

 

When I'm towing the travel trailer, I set the cold pressure on my Toyo Open Country H/Ts to the maximum printed on the tire sidewall - 80psi in my case. When I'm running empty, I'll drop them down to 65-70 psi but loaded, I want the maximum load capacity from those tires.

 

I,d run them 10 lbs under the max,your not putting much of a load on the truck,maybe 600 lbs.The only time i have mine at max is when i am pulling a heavy pin wt.One way is to check is how cool they are after a good pull.
