Air Bags

I just got my firestone air bags and comp. and i was wondering where you guys mount your tank and compressor?

Also i thought they set directly on top of the leaf springs, but these sit inside of the leafs on the axle... is this the right kit or did the parts man order me the wrong kit?

No you have the right kit it does sit on the axle, I pesonally don't have a compressor but I have had owns on previos trucks and I mounted mine back on the frame so I diden't have to listen to it when it was compressing.

When I had mine installed, I was stunned to find that they mounted the compresson in the engine compartment on a custom bracked that was bolted to the intake manifold. Looked like an odd place to put it, but it does stay cleaner than attaching it to the rail someplace. I'm not sure that the heat from the engine is all that good for the compressor though. Time will tell I guess.

A common compressor mounting is outside of frame rail under the passenger seat.

As far as the bag mounting, ¾ ton or SRW are spring mounted. Dually need extra tire space and mounting is moved inboard to axle

Mounting

I mounted my compressor on the lid of a surplus amo can. The body of the can is mounted upside-down under the cab just under the jack cubby hole,(where I draw the air from). This provide plenty of protection for the pump as it lives inside the can when the lid is closed. The tank is mounted to the frame just under the passengers seat. No camera or I'd get pictures.
Hope this helps .... Ken Gardner

BCB, are you putting the bags on your '97? as far as I know and can tell, all 2nd gens get mounted on top of the springs. That's where they were on my old '95 3/4 ton and where they will go on my '01.5 3500 if I ever get around to it. I have the Airlift brand, and I will have to remove the overload spring on my 1t so the bottom airbag plate doesn't hit the frame of the truck.
On the 3rd gens, you mount them on the axle tube; inboard of the leafs like SmokenRam's '05 in the pic.

Only the 2nd gen cab and chassis DRW needs to have the inboard mounted bags. There is plenty of room on a DRW pick up for bag clearance. My Airlift bags fit fine on my 3500.

My compressor is mounted under the passenger seat - I learned my lesson on mounting it externally! I would not suggest mounting it on a frame rail if you live in the salt belt!

Air bag controls and gauge are mounted in a Scotty Dodge Pod....

I didn't use the firestone compressor for mine, i built my own setup.I mounted my compressor under the hood on the left fender between the fuse box andthe brake booster and the air tank is under the backseat on the inside of the frame rail. I used the fill/drain valves for big rig air seats mounted in front of my right knee to fill and drain the bags. My bags mounted on top of the rear springs and inside the coils on the front. Then i have a dual needle guage for front and rear bag pressure and just another guage for tank pressure all mounted in the lower centre of the dash.

Tank is the spare tire location, compressor is in front of that.

Leveling valve. No gauges, No switches, Never needs touched.
