We are looking to buy a 96', 97' or 98' Dodge with a CTD. Also will be 4WD extended cab. We want the 98' but would settle for the others. I started out to looking at the 3/4 only, but have since noticed the 1 tons are the same $$ if not less. What are some pros and cons of each?

We do not want a dually. but do need 4WD. We pull a 27" TT

nothing wrong with duallies....i would prefer them...especially when towing...more stable, bigger brakes, more payload, instead of only having one tire left after a tire blowout you still possibly have 3

The other advantage to the 1 ton is payload weight.
You will need to check th ehitch weight of the TT you are pulling, if the truck you are looking at has the extra springs then that is a plus and will help you alot.

 

If you are looking for a truck older than a 2003 you cannot get a 3500 unless it's a dually. 03 was the first year for them. Duallys are cool but you do have to be a little more careful parking and watch out for those islands in the middle of the boulevard.......

 

Parking was the big issue for me.

A dually will not fit in my garage. Even if I just wanted to do some maintenance, I would have to leave the rear end hanging out and the garage door open. Won't fit even if I use both sides of the two car garage.

Parked in the driveway, the dually still crosses over onto the wife's side of the driveway. It would only be a matter of time before she hit it backing out.

I'd love to have a dually, but rather than parking safely in the garage, or even in the driveway, it would be out on the street, and since we live in a cul-de-sac, that would be about 80 feet from our driveway, not right out front. Just couldn't do that with a $30K truck.

 

You don't state what your other uses for the CTD might be. Is it mainly to pull the TT or will that just be a part of the job. The 3/4 ton will pull the TT fine I would guess. I have a 30' TT and a 27' boat either are no problem for my 2500. If this rig will be used mostly for towing by all means give the 3500 dually a good look. but by all means the 2500 is made to tow a 27 TT without worry. Look for a Manual rather than an auto or expect to put some $$ into beefing up the tranny.
