which 1/2 ton can out tow your 3/4 ton?

there's a good discussion on here about a young boy being raised RIGHT!
him and his Pop are looking to buy a Tow Rig for both their Jeeps.

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showt...=1#post1381394

anyways, this is the WORST website i have ever seen for uneducated folks to post in.

one guy wanted to know how to tell if he had disk brakes or not.

one guy wanted to know how to convert his manual truck to an automatic shifter, like a Ferrari, with the paddles on the steering wheel,

and now this kid tells the kid to get a 1/2 because they can be configured to tow more than a 3/4.

what could the very far fetched basis of that statement be?
a Chevy 1500 HD vice a 2500 non HD?

I like this quote:

That was the third new Ford SD I've owned since 00 for tow duty and I won't be making that mistake ever again. I'm practically convinced that Ford sends out some magical potion in their correspondence to owners that brainwashes them into lying on the internet about their mileage and power. Either that or they supply them with special calculators to use.

Well that depends. What can tow safely in the real world? Of course a 3/4 or 1-ton. But I hate to burst some bubbles, but if you want to go by ratings, some of the current trailer tow ratings are just plain nuts. Here are a couple:

2004 F-150 4x2: 9500 pounds
2004 F-150 4x4: 9200 pounds. These numbers are based on certain gearing and body style options of course.

Just for comparison:
2001 Ram 2500 5.9 V-8 4x2 Reg. Cab: 8900 pounds.
2001 Ram 2500 5.9 V-8 4x2 Quad Cab: 8600 pounds.

The tow ratings of the Dodges only go up if you have a V-10 or diesel. Even the 2001 3500 with a gas engine has a max. tow rating of 9450 pounds! That drops to 8750 pounds if the truck is a 2001 Quad Cab 4x4 3500.

Now, am I saying that a 2001 1-ton Dodge can't tow as much as safely as a 2004 F-150? NO CHANCE!!! I'm just showing some ratings. Sorry I didn't do a more through search so I could match year for year, I just did a quicky. Here are the 2 sites I got those statistics from:
Dodge:

http://dodgeram.info/2001/towing-charts.html#2500

Ford:
http://www.iboats.com/sites/trailerb..._page_259.html

Please don't give me any crap about which sites I picked...they are just the first ones that popped up that showed the tow ratings for a Ford F-150 vs. a Ram.

The 1500 HD is only a heavier rear axle and hubs to deal with the extra weight of the true crew cab, and still have the hauling and towing capacity of an actual 1/2 ton. As far as apples to apples comparison, I've hauled the same amount of weight in the box, and added a trailer, over the same route, and it's not even close. My 5.3 Chevy ran like a striped posterior simian empty, but didn't touch the performance of the 3/4 ton diesel over the same route.

You're on a Jeep site. 98% of Jeepers are complete friggin' idiots. I've dealt with them, I had a Jeep, those people are retarded. Just like most of the Harley community, I'm sure. People buying only for an image.

As a Jeeper I almost took offense...then thought about it and have to agree. I had to hunt long and hard to find a very technically-oriented e-mail list/group to join. Most are full of spoiled brats that were handed a new Jeep for graduation/birthday/etc. and want to throw all kinds of money at it even though they have no idea what they are doing. I've dealt with some of them in my business and can definately live without them.

Its funny, but the list I belong to is a Cherokee list, but we get true "gearheads" who own Wranglers, Grand Cherokees, and even fullsize Jeeps because our list is the only one they can find that actually answers their questions and know what we are talking about, and isn't just a bunch of spoiled whiners talking about chrome wheels, stereo systems, and adding "bling" (their terms!)

In all fairness, you can get as big of an engine in a half ton as a three quarter. So power is not an issue. Whatever you're hooked to matters most. One thing I can say though is that anyone who pulls much knows that trailers stop themselves and trucks stop themselves i.e. good brakes on a trailer so you don't burn up the brakes on a truck. With enough power and good brakes, there isn't any reason a person couldn't pull a jeep or two with a half ton. That still isn't saying a half outpulls a three quarter, just that it is certainly a valid pulling vehicle.

I had a 1/2 ton Ramcharger with a super stout 440, a Dana 70 rear and a Dana 60 front that would out pull most vehicles that are 3/4 or one ton. Including a lot of Diesels-we won't talk about fuel consumption though!!

I've got a Chevy S-10 with a Cummins "610" 5.9L under the hood that will out tow anything you guys could ever put up against it.

S-10, why not just use a geo metro with a CTD, front wheel drive, so with all weight in the front, it should get great traction.

Ok, easy does it.....there are few of us so called Jeepers on this board that do have a clue! That said, I know what you are talking about - I agree with NHDiesel....I choose not to be associated with most of them because DC does appear to install a hidden idiot magnet in them on the assembly line. "It's a Jeep thing....you wouldn't understand" ARGHH!! I hate that sticker.....I'm putting a sticker on my Jeep that says "If it's a Jeep thing.....I don't want to know" HA!!

I must admit, even for Jeep guys, they are remarkably uneducated....I could never particapate in a forum like that without losing my cool!!
