Re:3/4 ton vs. 1 ton

This can get rather confusing when trying to compare 3/4 and 1 ton for different years. 2003 is so different that it can't be compared to 2nd generation. Major difference is in the rear suspension for hauling extra load over rear axle. 3500 adds auxillary springs to 2500 rear springs. In many cases the actual tow rating is (GTWR) is higher for the 3/4 ton than the 1 ton. (Due to heavier suspension)

Re:3/4 ton vs. 1 ton

I am not personally familiar with the 2001 springs but look at my signature. I do this with stock 2500 springs with no squat. In my case the springs are the same as the 3500, also the rear and frame. I recently put dual wheels on it but it ran the same weights with G rated tires on it single for many miles.

Wish they would have put this on the door post along with a 9200 GVWR rating in place of the 8800 GVWR sticker. I wonder what would happen if one asked DC for a sticker to match the optional larger tires???? It appears that is what GM did with the 2500HD to get the 9200 lb GVWR. Re:3/4 ton vs. 1 ton

years ago there were differences but because of manufacturing costs they make them pretty much the same. anyway when they were different 1 ton frame had a thicker guage steel, 3 inch rear brakes instead of 2 1/2 and same went for leaf spings. the wheel studs were slightly larger, also a larger diameter front rotor
