19.5 wheels / larger brakes?
19.5 wheels / larger brakes?
I recently installed a set of Rickson 19.5 Eliminator wheels on my SRW 1996. I would like to know if anyone has experimented with larger brakes off of any different or larger Dana axle assemblies? I have a drum 70 in the rear and a 60 up front. I have a disc 80 sitting on my garage floor. The truck has never stopped well even after the wheel cylinder upgrade. I tow a very large 5'er. The truck stops better with the 5'er in tow.
I have experimented with different brake systems in the past with other vehicles and have always come up with winners but I do not have the time or patience to donate to my latest idea.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

I hear ya!
The drums in the back of my '98 sometimes cause me to pull the seat cushion out from between my cheeks in stop & go traffic.
Seems like you should be able to retro some 15" 3rd gen rotors on there - not sure how much, though... good idea.

EMS is working on a retro fit kit for 3rd gen brakes for the 2nd gen trucks.
On your fiver. Does it have brakes on more than 2 wheels? I have a tandem axle and the brakes suck! A trailer guy told me to add more brakes to the trailer and it will stop. Soon to be done.

Yes, there are brakes on all three axles.
I would need to swap everything from the knuckles out for a Chevy conversion but that should not be a problem. Do you know how large the Chevy calipers are or if they have multiple piston calipers?
I will make a call to my friendly local dismantler today.

I spoke with Tom and Eric at EMS. They have nothing cooking on a brake conversion that would allow larger brakes and/or rotors on a second generation truck at this time.
In addition, they said there is probably something haywire with my truck brakes. I am going to begin troubleshooting the system this weekend.
Thanks,
Don
