19.5 inch Tires Wearing
19.5 inch Tires Wearing
A couple of months ago I purchased 4 Michelin XZE 245/70 R19.5 tires with rims. One of the main reasons I purchased these tires was because I thot I could get more miles out of them. I have 12,000 miles currently on them and at the rate they are wearing I probably won't get 40,000 miles. What are your experiences with the 19.5 tires? I went back to the dealer and also called Michelin and they both said there was no mileage guarantee (which I knew) and they had no idea how many miles I would get with my application. Half the time I have my camper on and the other half I drive empty probably half on freeways.
If you're getting even wear across the width of he tread, then you're pretty much stuck with the wear you're getting. But if you're seeing more wear at one place than the other - say, in the middle third - then you can can make some adjustments that will improve wear.
The absolute best way to to set pressure and alignment is by temperature. A probe type thermometer works best, but an infrared will get you pretty close.

Have you weighed your truck and camper, perhaps you are very heavy. My 2011 auto with 7500miles on original tires, the front look new but the rears are worn badly from towing heavy which was almost all the miles. I have looked at your camper pics (very nice job) could there be something not in the pics that's causing instability at hi-way speeds or could the front be loaded too lightly. Both of these would cause the truck to move around a little creating tremendous tire wear.
The first 1/3 of the tread will always wear faster than the rest.
I'm in the last 1/3 of my 22.5's and I can't wear these things out! I had to re-cut the tread so they grip the winter roads since I'm stuck with them for at least another 20K miles!
You might try running the correct air pressure for your loads. Over inflation while unloaded will cause the rears to slip anytime you are on the throttle.

I had a tire shop explain that to me, they said the first part of the tire can be made from a softer rubber, gives better grip but wears faster. Once it's gone, so is the grip. I think it may pay to buy a tire made from all the same compound then have them siped (sp) I recently priced siping here at $30 a tire.
