I have a 1986 xr600 that is needing 2nd gear replaced. that requires pulling the motor and splitting the cases. I don't have much in the bike but it's definitely not worth the money to pay a shop to fix this. From what I can figure all the parts to fix it shouldn't cost more than $300 and at that point it'd be like a new motor. I would like to be hands on with this, just don't have the confidence to take it on without some help!

 

Its a pretty good job but not out of the range of average guy.

I used to race bikes but never done bottom end stuff on my 4-strokes. 2 strokes yeah, nothin to it cause of course the lack of cam and all that nice stuff.

Biggest thing is takin the time to do it and place eveything out right, get it and top dead center so it's in time and go slow, the trans isn't bad it just you got get to it first.

Like I said thought I have never done it, replaced a few clutchs, top ends and a crank but like I said that was on my last bike (cr250). My last XR (250) I let the shop do it but I was in good with them so the cost wasn't that bad.

 

it's not hard just get the correct flywheel puller and a good manual. you will thank yourself for it.

 

It's not too difficult of a job. Just take your time. Lay every thing out on your work bench IN ORDER. Clean every thing WELL. Personally, I'd replace the main crank bearings and I'd have the crank/rod bearing replaced. I've done that myself. But a press and a freezer is needed.

 

Check out dirtrider.net, there is a lot of knowledge there and maybe someone in your area willing to help. I ride 2 stroke still and am of no help. Servicehonda.com has the Honda parts look-up available on their site and their prices are very good.

 

JPR can you get the whole rod and crank together for that bike??

I'm lil out of touch since I got out it (after my wreck no more bikes). Last time i did the bottom end in my CR a bought a crank and rod together for only bout 55 dollars more than doin it myself. I think I may have got mine from parts fish but its been bout 3 years ago so I can't remember.
