Are We Just Going Through Growing Pains
Are We Just Going Through Growing Pains
Or is this the directions this board is gonna go also. I was under the understanding that DTR was created because of all the arguing and innapropriate behavior at one of the other sites. Top, this is not aimed at you or your staff of Moderators at all. You all have a thankless job and do a good job at it. Having grown up in the diesel world on this site I have noticed a trend on here as the membership grows. Threads are getting more and more opinionated and defensive in manner. It seems as though we have grown so confident in our point of view that if someone dissagrees they must be wrong, is there not room for more than one opinion to be right any more. I'm afraid to post anymore, seems like everytime I do somebody comes on and tell's me I'm wrong because they see things differently than I do. If you have a different idea than me just add yours to it, why do I have to be wrong. I am just using myself as the example, I have noticed this throughout the board. Have we grown so large like most corporations that we have lost site of the fact that we are here to help each other and meet new friends along the way, rather than prove we are right all the time. Sorry for the rant, but we have a good thing here that I hope stays that way.
It's just human nature to want to be acknowledged as the expert. Then there is the personality factor. We all have certain personality types that rub us the wrong way. I think that the bigger the group the more likely there is to be conflict in any interaction. It sure is a shame though because debate like that concerning the Walbro thing is really valuable. I know that I could install a good working system like that without alot of trial and error because of all the debate. It's just a shame to have to put up with all of the personal crap to dig out the info. Just remember it's not you someone is responding to - just words on a computer. Also remember that this occurs with any large group of people discussing any topic. The more folks, the more hassles, that's what make life interesting!!
That is why this site was started, and when we do see that stuff going on, we try to nip it in the bud as soon as possible. I'm sorry you feel the way you do. Most of the comments we get are very positive but you might have just had a bad week on here or something. Keep the good information coming. We like to have the input of all of our members. I know sometimes that personalities will clash, but just let us know and we'll take care of it.
Because there is a second opinion does not make it right. Because someone has thought of a different idea does not make that idea valid or workable.
I don't want to argue with you "99",
I kinda know what you are saying, but when someone has an idea that is plain wrong IMHO we have to nip that in the bud also. This board is also based on accurate, useable knowledge for the CTD.
Also, I think in today's world, the quick way to "get along" with everyone is to compromise your position. Personally, I think that is a major part of what is wrong in the world today. As as expample; last night someone come on the board and says "Have you tried this new product?" and they had a link to a pyrimid scam multiteir marketing scam. Are we to compromise with this guy who obviously was working for the site? Do we buy his products to see if they work? Do we join the marketing scam just to ne nice to him? Do we entertain the notion that his products actually work? NO, it's crap. lol
Opinions are strong here because 80% of the time they are based on first hand knowledge, hands on experience, or education. Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Of course, as these engine are continually modified by DC (and DTR members) we will have to update our knowledge.
We all make mistakes also. The other day I was all excited to tell everyone about a $20 fix I found for the fuel pressure guage jumping all over. P.J. pointed out a $4 needle valve did the same job only better. Was he to compromise with me? No, he had a better, cheaper fix. Did I run out and buy a needle valve? No I was dumb enough to have already bought the $20 "snubber".
Facts are facts.
"99" you can handle yourself pretty good. Don't be afraid to post here, also don't be afraid of knowledge people bring to the forum either.

This is the best-moderated Diesel Site on the net.
I hope that we can all keep our egos in check, and wisely be able to determine the difference between FACTS that we must defend and OPINIONS that we can't prove.
I've been as guilty as anyone, and for that I apologize, 99.
I trust that we can continue to keep this the best place on the 'net for CTD enthusiasts.

The only real place I have seen the discussions get into "personal attacks" is in the threads discussing social issues, i.e. politics, religion, race, and the items that we can all pretty much expect folks to have strong emotional biases about.
My experience has been that most of the folks who are on here on a regular basis are mature enough to present their views without insulting others, however there are a few who arent.
In the threads discussing trucks, most of the "discord" has been good natued rivalry in many cases. I think the Admin here does a good job of keeping things civil while allowing enough disagreement to make folks think about what is being said and allowing diverse ideas and ways of doing things to be presented and discussed.

I am new here and can say that the group in general gets on somebody when they are crossing the line.
And thats good because when its peer pressure it works better than if the mods do it.
Maybe some jerks but don't let the grousing get to you.
And there is not much flaming, which is the death nell to a forum.
Having said that, I think it helps the forum when someone like HOHN has a "opinionated moment", because you know he is serious, but joking at himself too. I just about coughed up a lung reading his Juice Attitude post....
I have leaned to ignore the "only one right way" posters comments, especially when their post history shows little or no track record of even mindedness.
Of course, I thought I was wrong once too, but was mistaken.

Don't get the wrong impression from my thread here, I still live on this site so I must not have to much of a problem. And don't think for a minute that my intelligence has been insulted, when it comes to these trucks I don't have any and readilly admit that. The overwhelming majority of my posts have been to ask questions and not answer them. When I give my opinion on something it is because it's something I have already been through on my truck. This thread was intended to point out something that I see as a growing problem and would like to see "Nipped In The Butt" before it turns into something real. I didn't mean to make this about me, but rather an overall change of character in the posts over the years.

I will happily boot anybody into Internet oblivion that doesn't want to play friendly here. We want every one to feel free to post their opinion as long as they do it in a friendly manner.
There is no reason for insults to be tossed about, just because somebody thinks they know a better way to do something. That is counter productive and as you say, defeats the whole purpose we are all here in the first place.
Free flow of information should not have to leave any one open to insults from some nut hiding behind his key board. We have never allowed that type of interaction here, and we never will.
i love this site and have noticed as of late the definsive tones that are being taken on here. top and all the mods are great...any time ive been outta line or had a problem, its been explained to me professionally and its all better. this site is MUCH nicer and cleaner than some other sites, one 4x4 site in particular. i get on here for the wealth of info to be had, and just ignore anyones rants or sarcasm.
