TapaTalk

Have you guys looked into implementing TapaTalk on the forums? I've seen it popping up on some other forums that I'm a member of.

I've seen it popping up on a couple of other forums. It's a paid app, so I haven't picked it up yet. Although if DTR starts using it, I'll probably go with it. The volume of new posts here makes going through the pages in Safari a little cumbersome.

If your phone will already browse the forum with a web browser, why would you need an additional app like this one?

Just not sure I see where the benefit would be?

While I haven't used the app yet, I've looked at their descriptions and screenshots. Basically it translates the forum in a more text based readable format that is easier to navigate on a phone.

The biggest problem I have in Safari is that I'm consistently having to resize and scroll side to side to read posts. If I zoom out far enough that I can read the full width of the post in one screen, the navigation buttons are usually too small to "click" with my finger. So I have to zoom in to move between pages or to select the "view new posts" option next to a topic title.

The other benefit is that it's a faster load and less reloads that browsing the full site via Safari. It's not an issue when I'm browsing on my wireless network at home, but when I'm out and about on 3G or Edge on AT&T, there is a lot of waiting time while the pages are loading as you go in and out of topics.

I just saw that they now have a free read-only version for iPhone. I'll have to go download it and give it a shot to see how well it works on a couple of the other forums where it has been set up.

Definitely interested in this, being a bona-fide DTR addict and all.

Wife tried to stage an intervention. I threatened to buy another truck....

I just tried out the read-only version of TapaTalk on one of the other forums I'm on that has it enabled. It actually works pretty well and makes browsing a lot easier. Posts are displayed with the user name, avatar and post content (including quotes). Signatures are left out to cut down on the text displayed.

It has features for displaying unread, participated and all threads. It also provides access to view your PM inbox as well as send new messages. The search feature works pretty well. The only difference I noted was that in the full version of the forum, a search for a common word showed the error message stating that the search term was ignored. In TapaTalk, it just said the search returned no results.

It looks like a good app from the user side. The website says it's pretty simple from the server side as well, but I'll let the admins make that call. I will note that the forum I tested it on is phpBB, and not vBulletin like DTR. But it's supposed to work similarly on both platforms.

In case anyone wants to see what the app provides, here is a link to their promotion page with features and screenshots
