Gotcha, thanks. I do think that custom avatars can be done without slowing down the page loads though. I'm also a prof. photographer and the Canon forum I've belonged to for a long time has always used them and its never been a problem. Their site url is below, I believe they use the same forum engine/software as this board.

Quote from Jack in the thread previously linked to:
Nope. Won't happen. sites like photobucket, when they go down, will cause problems with custom avatars not being loaded which on some browsers will keep the entire page from loading. In turn, I get complaints about our site being slow or not work when it's not even our fault. Sorry, but it's not ever going to happen.

Yeah, its an incredible place. Great site, great mods and great community. Many professionals there, many semi-pros like myself and LOTS of beginners. Its a friendly place to learn. Are you a photographer?

If the avatars could be loaded into the DTR database instead of being hosted at Photobucket (or other photo host site), wouldn't that avoid that problem?

No problem to avoid, it has been plainly stated here time and again, no photo avatars. Going over the issue 100 and 1 times won't change the outcome, the decision has been made and the reasons have been clearly stated.

...So, you're saying that its not open to discussion, I'm assuming...at least thats what it kind of sounds like, you know...just taking a shot in the dark. LOL..... let it go guys. They obviously don't want the hassle of avatars.

Actually it has been open for discussion...and discussion...and discussion...... The problem is the server issue and once we get that updated and solve our real problems like just keeping the site up and running, then maybe......well who knows.

We just can't deal with that issue right now, we obviously have to prioritize and that puts that issue at the bottom of the list

I was kidding. I don't run a server or a discussion forum and really don't know what the avatar issue really entails, but I respect your decision to prioritize.

Okay, I got it all figgered out...

You allow custom avatars, which would cause people to stop asking about custom avatars...

By removing these threads from the site, you'd probably save more than enough bandwith and hard-drive space to cover the avatars...
