Jack, perhaps it's time to revisit the subject of a site membership fee again?
I believe the vast majority of current DTR members would gladly accept a nominal charge for the privilege of playing in your sandbox.
Realizing that new users may balk at paying to play, the first 10 or 50 posts could remain free, with further site interaction requiring admission. Even though the multitude of passive users still drain system resources, surely there are more than enough active members who could be tapped to enhance their DTR experience.
I don't see the site stats you do, but considering DTR's rather large, loyal membership - 10,000 users paying only $5 or $10 each would buy enough server capacity for a (little
) while, anyhow...

There is a good example of a semi- pay to play site that I really like. It has different levels of membership which I think is gay, but how they limit the guys who don't pay is cool (I'm one of those guys). It's like, you can't see just about any of the pictures, about half of the threads (the tech section is one
)Anyway, I pretty much Know they want to stay free, so I suppose a fund raiser would be good.
How about making some of these wealthy advertisers kick in some product? That air intake giveaway really boosted interest. Also, didn't some jerk win a clutch around here? THAT would have been a good raffle item, huh?
I am having withdrawals, my avatar really shows my demented personality.
DTR people now understand me....
membership fee 20.00 paid through Paypal
avatar hostage money 10.00 paid through Paypal
having the security camera catch the thieving Siberian cookie monster-
yeah baby! priceless
Heidi in NY up late without supervision

Guys I have been oblivious to the whole donate to DTR thing. I think this is an awesome site. Another forum asks members to voluntarily support it and become a "premium member" by donating $20 which I did over there because I like that place too. So from now on I pledge $20 a year to help defray server costs and support DTR. That's $20 right now and $20 every Jan 1st thereafter. It's worth that to me. I think of it almost like a magazine subscription but the information and help here is far superior to any mag I ever had and the people here are cool.
I have mentioned to Mr Thorpe that I would like to see something that recognizes members that donate... something by their user name... something to that effect. We're working on it.
AWESOME, Great idea MAD!!!!!!!
Maybe just a $ symbol next to the "online" dot..............................
