I decided to give it a try again and see how it goes. I'm not going to allow people to post their own pics because that's where our speed problems occured last time. I will be providing more choices for those who decide to use one though. This is on a trial basis

I think you can use your own Avatar as long as its served from a different site. There are plenty of places to get free web space, post a picture there and point to it from here! Works for me!

The biggest reason for doing so was because some of those remote sites don't allow remote calls, and some of them are very slow, which causes slow page loads for everyone. That's why I got rid of them so long ago. The only way to bring them back without issue was to disable the capability of bringing them up remotely. sorry
