Thumbs down Automatic links!

I would like to give two thumbs down to the automatic links that are happening. I typed "ball valve" in a thread and its now a link to something that i am not endorcing. Also "water pump" has been turned into a link also. Is there anything we can do to eliminate this....is it on our end some how or is someone trying to pull a fast one on ya jack?

enoughs enough

It has to do with the "Amazon Ads thread" also in this section.

I agree with you, they are a real pain!!!

I would have no problem with more ads, because to be honest, I don't see them anyway (thanks to AdBlock Plus extension for FireFox!).

If you use FireFox, I HIGHLY recommend you download it, and when you restart it will ask you for a list, I use the EasyList USA one.

Anyway, I know that DTR is such a large site that it is not cheap to run, but I think that the ads are so annoying that it is to a point where that will probably drive people away. I mean think about it, two threads about the problem already???

[EDIT]

I noticed I didn't have AdblockPlus installed on this computer, this is not my home computer that I am on now. It completely DESTROYS the ads.

GO FIREFOX!

I appreciate the feedback, but I also don't appreciate the fact that you, on a site that relies on advertising to stay alive, inform people on how to get rid of those same ads. In case you didn't notice, this site is free we'd like to keep it that way. The ads are a way we can do that. I'd appreciate you as a user, who uses this free site not cut us off at the knees at the same time you gain information from this resource. Does that make sense? I can't stop you from doing anything, but to come in here and encourage people to screw us, well, not appreciated.

About the amazon stuff. Like I said in the other thread. I'll let it run for a couple days and see how it works out. If it sucks, then I'll kill it.

I am in no way trying to detract from the money that your site makes. Like I said in my first post, I -completely- understand that DTR relies on ads in order to keep it free, and it does not have to rely on another source, like TDR, (magazines, right?) in order to run the forum.

However, I do think that there are ads that are appropriate and ads that are not. I know that it is completely up to you and the DTR webmasters in how you choose to display ads and such, but I think it is also completely up to the members to decide if they want to display them or not. If I understand correctly, the ads don't bring the site in any money unless the ads are actually clicked? AdBlock plus does not prevent the ads from loading, it just prevents them from being displayed to the end user. They still load in the background, and the sites are still contacted, so if DTR receives money from the number of hits instead of the number of clicks, then AdBlock plus will not interfere. I also have never clicked on an ad before even when it is displayed, that is just my personal preference.

My post about how to use FireFox and AdblockPlus was soley to prevent the displaying of the links in the posts, because it seemed that a number of users had found them to be very distracting. I would have never posted about how to block the regular ads, because believe me I know that every little bit of money that DTR receives helps.

I think my position comes from my background with Linux server administration: I strongly believe in open source. In the next few months, I plan to send a $700 server that I bought myself out to Chicago in order to donate bandwidth to several open source projects that I support. However, that is just my opinion, it was not by any means detract from DTR!

I don't mind the links as long as they're passive.

I'm as curious as the next cat, but I don't click on a hyperlink unless I know where it goes.

p.s. I'm #13 on dieselfelony's PM list...

The chances are pretty low, but it does happen. Just be careful, or do what I do and just don't click them .
