Seems like on mine the stake pocket bottoms are open? Or at least the seams are. So nothing collects in there. As long as everything is sealed and painted up good you shouldn't get any streaks I shouldn't think.

Blue Goose - that Road Runner is sharp. The burned picture really hurts to look at.

I made these ones so they are open at the bottom too plus they are closed at the top not open like the originals. Yours is a 51? It has the newer style bed right? Everything isn’t square like mine?

Oh man that makes that story even sadder. Lionels are a train collection?

It's either an early early '51 with left over cab and bed or the title is wrong. It has the early style gauges and square bed like yours. I guess I could look up my VIN and check.

So your stake pockets are non-functional then, just for looks?

Post some pictures please, I’d like to see it.

Yes they are non functional, other then that the sides are a exact replica. I just didn’t want all the water and crud going in there for something I’ll never use

That’s really neat! Have you been to the blackhills in SD? There’s a huge indoor train set up there.

no never have been to SD.
If you're not going to use the pockets why not leave the tops of the bed rails solid(without the pocket holes?)
