Thermostat housing problems
Thermostat housing problems
OK. Well Friday i put in a new thermostat. Bolted everything back together and was leaking coolant around the bolting area. I went to advanced to get the gasket for the housing. Went home and there is no way in h*** that it would fit. Called advanced and they said that is the only thing that comes up. (was talking to a guy that had a 12 valve.) he check the manual to see if its right. Well in the end i went an bought blue RTV(they recomended that). My question is would that work to seal for now. Until i figure out what the deal is.
Sry if any of this does not make sence. I was working out in the cold trying to figure this all out.

I'm not sure about the blue RTV but for peace of mind you could get sheet gasket, trace around the part and cut it out. You could do that INSIDE the house where it's nice and warm! Just a thought...
I've used is in the past, they have different types and thickness's. Where I live the large auto parts places are open until 900/930. May be worth the effort incase you don't get the correct one until next week. Cuts easy with an exacto blade or a single edge. That RTV can be a mess to deal with after the fact. You may also want to search a bit more and see what others may say. Again it's worked for me.....
I've used it there, on my last truck. That was a 1998 model...also on 67 nova with a chevy big block, that put out some heat, way more than a diesel. I'm not saying that I've left it, it's more of a fix until I could replace with what was required.

This is a dumb question I know, but was one on there when you replaced it Friday? Did you just forget to put it back on...? If it's rubber sometimes you can re-use it...I know, its a dumb question! Or did you scrape the old one off....
Maybe at this point, use the RTV around the bolts with the old seal in place to get you by. The gasket you need may be a square edge, o-ring. I'm not sure why the difference's in styles between our trucks but at least you'll be back on the road. I would have though others would have chimmed in by now. Sorry I couldn't be more help!
