Yet Another Question About idling

I am in the RV transport business and I am having a sleeper installed on the truck. I will be idling my truck all night (8 hours) in very hot conditions in the summer and in very cold conditions in the winter. I know there is a concern of low combustion chamber temperatures while idling. What can I do to best protect my engine under these conditions? I have heard that there is a "fast idle" kit available but haven't been able to find one yet.

Any comments appreciated. I know this subject has been brought up previously but I would like your comments in this specific situation.

Thanks

Tim

I would be interested to see a photo of your truck after the sleeper is added....are you streching the frame to gain clearance or do you only transport tag-alongs and never have to move a 5er :

Re:Yet Another Question About idling

Like Shovelhead I use a stick to idle my engine RPM up also only my stick fits between the seat and GO PEDAL that way I can just move my electric seat to Idle the engine higher

Heres a fast idle kit for your ISB motor

Re:Yet Another Question About idling

You should probably think about an exhaust brake too. I know on my truck that just a high idle won't bring up the egt's enough. If I am wrong someone please correct me.

Re:Yet Another Question About idling

I assume by your post that you will only be using extended idle times in very hot or very cold weather for A/C and heater respectively. In hot weather with the A/C on, idle EGTs should stay at or above 300*F which is the critical wash down cylinder temp. In the winter, good luck with trying to keep cylinder temps above 300*F without an exhaust brake. Your best option for winter is to install an Espar Engine heater. You will easily recover the cost of this unit with fuel savings for the amount of idling you will be doing.

Cummins Alberta is seeing a shift in Class 8 trucking in terms of overnight heat. Many new trucks are equiped with both Espar Engine heaters and Espar Sleeper Air heaters. The trucking industry is finally starting to realize the benefits of auxilliary heaters versus idling all night.

Just my $.02 worth.

Shovelhead-

Has your dealer seen this mod, and if so has he voided your warranty?

;D

Re:Yet Another Question About idling

Can you post the length of the frame stretch with cost? Thinking of a crew cab myself. Most I ever see are 2wd, my running gear is in better shape than most I've seen, and my flat bed had been partially welded with custom hitch and bumper.

Re:Yet Another Question About idling

speaking of sleepers---
There was a dually 4x2 dodge here at the flying j last week, it had a sleeper and dual rear axles, stacks and a flat bed. It was stretched and man did it look cool. I wanted to post a pic but with my recent move I couldn't find the digital camera in the storage unit .
