YES! No longer a member of the stock automatic club!!

Well, its still a stock tranny with exception of the shift kit, and the Goerend Bros single disc torque converter that is getting ordered tomorrow morning! Well. A guy i know has a 24 valve(2001) with 80hp injectors, and an EZ. He had some tranny work done(line pressures bumped) with a Dayco aftermarket converter about a year ago. He has only put 8k miles on that converter, and its shot. He is very frustrated, so i told him about Goerend, and that i was thinking of going with a single disc goerend. He called dave, and talked to him, and Dave said if we both ordered he could do free shipping, so im having him order mine tomorow when he orders his while im in school, and i will be putting it in myself when i get the chance Dave said it has a 100k mile warranty, and i have been wanting to order a better converter for a good year or more now, and im finally gonna bite the bullet. I figure this is as good an opportunity as ill get, and i know it will be a good converter, so now all i have to do is wait, and then put it in when it gets here. I also have some 215 injectors to go in, and one of my injectors is messed up, and leaking, so i will be putting those in as soon as i get the injector installation kit. Should feel like a whole new truck So who all is running a single disc from dave, and how are you liking it? Im sure it will be a whole new truck, and i also hope i wont have to use the lockup switch to be fairly quick now. Anyways. Sorry the post is so long, but im just really excited, and i was thinking of a TCI converter, but im really glad i made the decision to go goerend I will have a full report for sure when i get it in. Maybe when it shifts to 2nd now with the converter unlocked, I will see the RPM's drop some, and actually go somewhere instead of just wasting power/fuel. Anyways. Im happy! Also, any tricks i need to know about when swapping the converter? Thanks!

Eric

I know the feeling. I just ordered a new VB from DTT yesterday. Said it would take 5-7 days to custom build it and then usual shipping. I can't wait. Congrats on the new purchase.

I have a Goerend single disc with woven graphite linings. Its real tight, truck was like a new animal. I no longer have the craving for it to get in to lockup to get the 'real' power.

I'd be careful with the mystery switch. Locked shifts are REALLY hard on your trans. Per Dave's advice I decided I didn't need the lockup switch.

Dave Goerend's Single-Disc here also.
It feels like I added about 40 hp to the truck with the tighter converter.
It's definitely tighter, but not so tight it's uncomfortable to drive in town.

I like the way it shifts firmly even under WOT, I don't need a lock-up switch.

You did JUST the TC?
I thought a TC, without some Valve Body & line pressure work, was not recommended?
Quote from Bill @DTT...
"Guys want to buy TC‘s thinking it will solve their problem. If you have a TC clutch that failed on your oem TC chances are the aftermarket one will fail also, it may take a little longer but it will still pre-maturely fail. That is why our company does not to sell TC’s as a stand alone item. It would definitely be more profitable and in my own best interest but definitely not yours."

This article was written in Oct, 2002. Has this belief changed?

Dave had no warnings about only replacing the TC? (not knocking him...just curious).

www.gbtansmissions.com $650 for the single disc. Best price of anyone i've found, and from what i've heard, the best customer service.

Well the converter came in today Looks like i will be installing it sometime soon, when i get everything ready. Cant wait to get it in and see how it does. I also think i might wire my mystery switch to have the forced unlock also so that if i want i dont have to have it locked. Do you guysd think this converter will hold my combo fine, and be fine if i added some 215's also? He said the clutch lining was basically the same as stock, which kinda worried me, but it has a 100k warranty, and i have heard a LOT of good stuf about them, so i think ill be fine either way. Just hope to goodness it doesent slip. Do your guys converters hold good in lockup? I dont know when i will put it in. Not really looking forward to pulling the tranny but definatley looking forward to seeing the results. What is the best way to spread the framerails to get the crossmember out? Handyman jack maybe? Also, does the flexplate have to be unbolted by pulling the little access cover off the engine? Thanks guys! Im excited.

YES!! This is the exact setup I'm considering. I already have a shift kit, I'm just looking for a TC. What HP is your single disk rated at? I am really interested in hearing your results. Please keep us informed!!

Yeah, i was actually gonna Pm you anyway because i saw where you were looking around for converters too. Remember when i was talking about the 3 disk billet covered dayco converter for $550. They turned out to be pretty junky as the guy i know that was running one ordered a goerend converter with me(got both the same time for free shipping) because his Dayco went out with only 8k miles or so on it, and they wouldnt waranty it, because it had been in there close to a year.Either way, i will for SURE keep you guys updated, because i am VERY excited about getting it in there. Cant beat it for a 100k mile warranty with unlimited years. Im sure the stall will be much better. Right now at WOT my truck pulls to about 2600-2700rpm's and just stays there. Never drops rpm's between shifts. Dave says this should drop around 400rpm between shifts, so it should be getting the power to the ground. Im not really sure what HP it is rated at, but i have heard quite a bit about it bieng able to hold 350hp fine with a valve body/shift kit. I believe it will be fine, and you guys will get a full report when its in. Really glad i bit the bullett and bought it.

Yes, you'll want to remove the access cover behind the heat exchanger to unbolt the TC. In my experience, to remove the cross member just take out the bolts, pound the crossmember straight up (towards the top of the cab) taking care not to squash the fuel lines above it and then the crossmember will slide backwards.
