Would stacking an EZ be better for my truck?

Hello all. Got a question...I have a fairly aggressive fueling box right now that does nothing w/ timing...Would it be better for my truck to add a timing box such as an EZ? what i mean is, would it help lower my temps/egt's? would it be a better timing curve (good for engine) because of the fueling enhancements or would it be worse for my truck...reason im asking is I do plan to get DDII's in the near future and i dont want to waste my money...i know the DD"s will give me the xtra power w/o the EZ that i want, Does the EZ do anything besides timing? do i ask enough questions? ill zip it up here ;D

I would recommend against combining boxes of any kind, or "stacking". THere is a VERY real potential for engine damage, because each manufacturer designs their box to work with a stock truck. They cannot possibly foresee all the variables involved with combining their product with someone else's.

If you already have a wire-tap box, that's all you need. The larger injector will effectively advance timing a small amount. This is sufficient. The marginally lower EGTs associated with timing boxes is only worthwhile IMHO on a truck that is otherwise stock.

Combine your fueling box with injectors, and that will be plenty. Don't be tempted to look at timing as a band-aid for EGT problems. If you need more air, get it. Don't try to fix an air shortage with timing advance.

Think about this.. If your timing is marginally too little, you will have a little less power, and a little higher EGT.

If your timing is marginally too much, you can really hurt the engine under some conditions.

I would encourage you to call Keith Lockliear of Diesel Dynamics to find out why they had Edge drastically reduce the timing on their DD labelled boxes (TTPM and UFM). Their is a definite reason that the timing element to those boxes is very subtle.

I would HIGHLY recommend that someone stick to a no-timing (blue chip or TST box) with large injectors, or a MILD timing box (DDTTPM) with smaller injectors (275s-DD2s).

I would only recommend an Edge EZ on a truck that is otherwise completely stock, and will remain so!

How is your truck doing with the EZ and the DD2's and why would you run this setup in your truck and recommend others not do it? Just curious...

STACK THEM.
Coulda Shoulda Woulda.

In Basic terms, some companies do not have the timing capabilities, or wish to not install them into their fueling boxes.
Edge has this capability and uses it generously.

Will advanced fuel delivery timing hurt my truck?
Answer, well it does raise cylinder pressure a bit.

But then you have to ask yourself, Is 400hp going to hurt my engine. Yes, it will shorten the life of your engine.

Then ask yourself, do you like smoke, do you like power, if the answer is yes.
Then STACK AWAY!!!

Making power in higher rpms requires more timing.
In a box comparison a while back Katdiesel ran a DD box vs. A Comp.
The Comp made about 5hp more, with a little more timing.

I have run a high timing box (edge drag comp) for over a year.
I have replaced one headgasket, pistons were fine.
Also, I know a guy who ran just a powermax 3 for a year, he blew his headgasket too, no injectors or sever timing.

Point is, if your going to modify.
Someday you'll have to pay the piper.

Stacking is not a bad thing.

If your just looking for timing you might want to consider running a superchips tuner. costs less than an ez. we've stacked it with edge comp or vanakken box, and not an any problems. just lots of power...

I agree with Darrell and Justin W... STACK IT!

On my truck I went .35 seconds faster and trapped 3 mph faster in the 1/4 mile with the stack vs. not stacking. I ran stacked, then not stacked, then stacked again, and the gains are there! Added benefits include better fuel mileage, better bottom end, and lower EGTs. The truck will smoke more off the bottom when you put your foot in it, but it's just as clean otherwise. I don't think it's too much timing to run them stacked, and like Justin W. mentioned, it really helps the high RPM hp.

I am rinning an old Blie Chip Three wire box, and an EZ.

IMO the Superchips tuner is a waste of money!
