Will 2003 wheels work on a 1998 model?

I'm trying to see if anyone out there has put the 17x8 five spoke alluminum rims off of a 3rd generation dodge 2500 onto a 2nd generation dodge 2500.

I put the bare rims on it today just for a size fit and they looked fine, I am just concerned that they have too much back spacing. I am planning on putting 305/70/17's on the truck with a 2 inch lift up front. It looks like the tires could rub on the control arms, but it's a close call.

I've seen trucks on the road with my body style with the 2003 rims on them but I haven't found any info to tell me if the tires scrub alot.
I'd appreciate any help y'all have for me.

i've seen 2nd gen.'s with the 3rd gen wheels on them. i don't know the backspacing on the newer wheels but i've heard of others rubbing the control arms with a 305/70/16 on stock 16" alloys. so you might rub them slightly. maybe run a slightly skinnier tire.

I have them on a 2001 with the 2003 OEM tires. Fit perfect. The backspacing on the new wheels is very close to the 16" Alloys that came on the 2001.

Stock 2001 16" Alloys 6.25" back space
3rd Gen Alloy 5.75" or 6" (found conflicting info.)

I have hear there are back space issues with these new wider wheels on the pre 99 trucks.

Man, those look nice. I just wish there were more options available for 17" tires (brands, sizes).

The price can be very atactive on Dealer pull-offs. I got mine for $500 with new BFG tires. Sold the old 2001 16" wheels for $350. That's $150 for new wheels and tires.

silverfox,

You better wait for some more responses.....I believe the wheels on a 2001 are different from the 98.

Let's wake this thread back up!!

I would like to install factory aluminum wheels on my 97. However, I have heard the 00-02 wheels have backspace issues on the 94-99 trucks. Does anybody know how the 03-present wheels fare on the 94-99 trucks?

i just put a set of 05 polished alloys on my wife's 98 12v 2wd. no problems at all, and i put a set of polished alloy 05s on my friends 95 4x4 12v, no problem. and i put a set of 05 chrome steel wheels on my friends 98 12v 4x4 no problems. the only one i have had a problem with is the 2001 to2002 alloy wheel. tried it on my 93 4x4 3/4 dodge, would fit over the rear brakes but rubbed on front. then we tried them on my friends 98 4x4, fit the front but hit the drums on the rear. so i think i about covered it all.

I'd skip the 17" size and go to 18"s. More tire selection, better aftermarket.

Toyo and other makers are really pushing the 18" and 20" sizes.
