Question What size is my rear end?

I am looking for an aftermarket differential cover for the rear. I am thinking about PML. I have an '02 with a 6 speed. How do I know if I have a Dana hybrid 70 or 80?

PML Page

Thanks,
~Rob

Thanks Doc.

Geno's has the Mag-Hytec for $235 (US)
Pier's lists the Mag-Hytec for $293.75 (CDN)

The PML (black powder coated) lists for $175 (US) on their site.

After looking at them, I like the Mag-Hytec better.

Wouldn't your wife be able to tell you?

Just kidding.

I love my Mag Hytecs. Makes checking the fluid so simple. I will know in a coulple of weeks how the fluid change goes.

Good luck on whatever you purchase.

Mag Hy-Tec's are very impressive...excellent quality and changing the rear end fluid in under 30 min is amazing to me. And the two strong magnets keep the gearlube much cleaner. Scary how much they pick up after a day at the drag strip. Love mine!

Don't know the PML but have not heard any negative comments on them either.

I just ordered my Dana-80 Mag-Hytec today from a local supplier. Should be here tomorrow.

Ive seen em n there purdy nifty..although if ya think about it most of us have using trucks so whats the point of puttin a clear cover on something thats gonna get dirty fast..my truck is usually covered in mudd or dirt 24-7 let alone you gear fluid aint gonna stay clean n visible that long..thats just my opinion..if i had as how truck..well heck id throw a crome cover on still before i went with a clear

Being as that I are an electrical engineer and not a mechanical one and absolutely hated thermodynamics in college, I have a question:
I would think that the clear covers (I am assuming they are lexan) don't offer the cooling that the aluminum finned ones do. Anyone have any comments about that or am I wrong (as usual)?

Rob, I would think the majority of heat transfer takes place along the whole mass of the differential and the small surface area of the cover wouldn't contribute all that much no matter what it's made of.
Could be wrong though...

Sadly they don't make one for the Dana 80. Waaaaait a second... does our hybrid D80 use a D70 or a D80 cover? Anyone know?

The Hybrid D80 uses a D80 housing with D70 internals. So they are different.

Those clear covers are pretty nifty but I have a hard time putting something plastic on my rear end. I don't off road much but when I do, it can get pretty knarly and the last thing I want is to smack a stump and crack that housing and lose all my fluid in the middle of no where.
