Waste Gate question
Waste Gate question
Should I be able to move my waste gate shaft back and forth by reaching under with my hand and pulling back and forth on the shaft ?
Does it move back, toward the firewall?
I was checking mine to see if it was stuck or if it can be moved by hand

it may move a little, but should be really tight, if it's moving really freely it may have come unhooked??? I had this happen on my 97' & it ran terrible, hooked the rod back up & it spooled awesome again, might wanna check if you haven't already????? Dusty
No , I cant move it with my hand . Not even budge it. I thought I would be able to move it back and forth . I read a post on low mpg and someone said to check if the waste gate is stuck . ?? I was just checking if it would move.
Im guessing the boost pressure going through the elbo and rubber hose to the little canaster must be pretty strong to operate it. Am I correct?

take a portable air tank & then remove the rubber line from the head on the wastegate & then plug the end on the tank directly to the wastegate as if it were a valve stem & watch & see if the rod shoots out, should only take around 30-40psi or maybe even less on a stocker & that should let ya know if it's stuck or not! Dusty
Just weld it shut or use a turn buckle & lock it down. Escaping air is like letting Horse power out. I run mine welded & have numerous ones on the street that i have welded shut & they run so much better. A waste gate is just that, a Waste on any stock or mildly modified truck. That is my opinion & my experience.
I can stick my air nossle with my air compresor on the rubber hose off the elbo to see it move I guess.
Im only getteing 14.9mpg when I fill up ever 2 weeks, highway and city and climping a steep 30 min drive up a mountain every weekend. Gotta go up the mountain o/d off in 3rd lockup at about 30 to 50 mph with sharp curves in the road. Still im going about an hour drive on flat highway. Lot of sitting at stoplights and stop and go in town though.
Im checking stuff under the hood for better mpg. I did get 19mpg once on flat highway only, when I checked the mpg.
Took my 5er loovered tail gate off and put my dodge tailgate back on last week so I can check the mpg with a different tailgate

However if you run enough fuel pushing the turbo out of its optimal range then its not doing much good either....
