waste gate or not

i've had a small disagreement. i need to know what is the purpose of a wastegate. my opinion was to regulate presure in the head. thats why you need to up grade head gaskets and such for higher hp mods. am i nuts? thanks jared

These trucks are wastegated at 17 or so psi, which is much below the limit of the headgasket (at about 50psi). To create boost, the turbo must spin faster. The wastegate keeps the turbo from overspeeding and blowing itself apart. It also keeps you from getting excessive drive pressures. Check out this link for more turbo/wastegate/boost info: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm
