Smile A Vulcan question

I know the lift pump threads have been beat to death around here but this is a little different. This is more aimed at guys that have a Vulcan relocation kit installed already.

As my sig says, I've got a Scotty big line kit installed on my truck and love it. Has worked great for a few years now but I have another lift pump on the way out.

I decided to go the relocation route, more to give it a try as well as ease of replacement when it's needed. The stock location is not a problem to change out a pump, except when it's way south of freezing and on the side of the highway.

So here is my question............

When it's installed in it's "new" location, has anyone found that a shield of some sort is needed with regards to slush, mud, rocks, etc???? The underside of a truck can be a pretty hostile environment.

On a side note...........

Speaking of the Vulcan kit. Eric was awesome to work with!! I phoned him on a Sunday of all things and went over a few changes I wanted made to my kit. Because I already had the Scotty kit, I wanted to re-use some of the tapped fittings as well as have AN fittings on the pump itself just to make changing even easier. Eric never missed a beat and made it all happen right then and there. Kit was shipped the next day.

The talent and knowledge floating around this board is just amazing and enjoyable to tap into when needed.

Thanks guys!!

Jeff

I also had a great experience with Eric.

Here is what I did with the relo. I have a hoist under the bed of my truck so it will dump, so I put the pump on the outside of the rail right next to the tank fittings, and as low as possible. The in line to the pump is only about 12" long total! I did not put in a shield or cover and the pump does get dirty, but no ill effects yet.

I have had great results with the kit. My pressure only drops about 1psi wot. Time will tell as to longevity.

I agree, no problems whatsoever! I'm sure a shield wouldn't hurt anything, though.

I had a chance to stick my head under the truck this morning. It's a little sloppy weather wise so I figured now was a good time to look.

Other than a little dampness, that area is not bad for slop collecting in there. I guess a shield of some kind won't hurt anyways.

Thanks guys, appreciate the info.

He's made some changes to the kit since I got mine. If I'm not mistaken, one is a piece of flex loom to shield the harness. I'm going to fab upa small aluminium bent plate to shield my pump this summer. Although, as others have stated, my pump looks just fine under their after this winter (pretty mild weather here though).

You have to remember, it's not like your mounting it in the fender well behind you back tire, yes it's not as protected as the engine compartment, but it's a pretty safe place up in the rail like that.

For the value, peace of mind and easy of service, the Vulcan kit it a great set up, and also as mentioned, Eric is a stand up guy who will take care of you.

When I get my plate bent I'll post some pics.

Thumbs up

Mine's doing fine inside the frame rail for 19 months now although I don't go off road.

The main reason I got the kit was ease of service when the pump barfs again. Bonus is it now becomes a pusher.

Yes the kit does come with a flex loom for the harness extension.

In my case, I ordered the 98.5 to 99 kit even though I have an 02. The reason for this is because I didn't want the fuel pressure guage tap in the middle of the VP to FF fuel line. Eric mentioned that the 98.5 to 99 kit comes without it and he would adjust the fuel line length to work so I went that route. I also changed the pump fittings to AN just to make changes easier when laying on your back in a snow storm changing pumps out.

As for a shield of some sort, I'm going to rig something up. It can't hurt so why not.

I travel 5 miles of gravel road daily in my comute to and from work, it gets rather nasty down there, but a little water from the hose will keep most of it off. It really isn't in a location that collects a tremendous amount of slush. Good idea about the shield, the cleaner the better. Post pics

I have a few photos in my gallery. the new location is almost protected by the transmission shield and aft crossmember. Last time I was under there it looked just like the day I installed it.
