VP44 Pump and upgrades

I just finished a trip from Oregon to Eastern Iowa and back and along the way my VP44 pump and I did not get along . I used the key and got the codes (0121, 1693, 0122, 0217). I managed to get home but had more than my fare share of "dead pedal" and poooooooooooooor milage. The truck was severly underpowered too. After referenceing this site I have it pegged as a bad IP. I went to the dealer and used some info from this site as ammo and got them to agree to replace the pumps. The truck has 79,350 miles on it and this will be the second IP and third LP. Since I will more than likely get the bill on the next go around, I would like to prolong it as long as possible so, what would you folks reccommend for upgrades? I have a low pressure warning light but am now putting on a mecanical fuel pressure gauge. Will the FASS be a wise addition? I usually have a trailer of some sort hooked to the truck so I want to upgrade the injectors to 100hp ones. Thanx for all the help.

Did you tell the dealer what codes you have? sounds more like a APPS problem than a pump one. Get the gauge, and a fass is always a good up grade.

Thanx. I did give them the code and wondered about the APPS but at this point they have the truck and I am hoping that it will be all beter when I get it back. I definatly want to do the FASS upgrade soon. Does this FASS eliminate the factory lift pump or the in-tank pump?

also i must mention, if you're gonna get bigger injectors and then add in towing a trailer, you better get other guages along with that fuel pressure one, starting with a pyrometer. and deff. a trans temp if your truck is an auto

They're going to replace the VP and install a new lift pump in the tank? That's what's in my truck. I've checked the fuel pressure a number of times on the stock pump in the tank setup and while the highest is about 9 psi on an idle, according to Dodge, long as the lift pump is putting out "positive pressure" the VP pump should be fine. I just sold a complete FASS setup due to me not wanting to drop the tank to install it and would suggest that if you don't want to go through the same thing maybe think about adding a Holley Blue electric fuel pump INLINE between the (pump in the) tank and your VP. It's much easier than dropping the tank or lifting the bed up off the truck to access the tank. The only complaint I've heard about the pump in the tank is they can be somewhat "weak", tho long as there's that "positive pressure" things are fine running up to a slightly modified truck. I haven't heard of a pump in the tank failure tho for sure there's better solutions. But as long as they're paying and they're covering the warranty they can put what they want to in there. Long as it works I'm happy!! Big HP applications should run something like the FASS to keep that VP full of fuel but stock to slightly modified trucks can get by with a less costly solution. The Holley Blue can be had for under $150 and installation is a breeze comparatively speaking. FASS is a great setup but installation, IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE PUMP IN THE TANK, is somewhat complicated and time consuming. For us pump in the tank trucks folks, there's a better way thats easier to install and less costly....and it's called HOLLEY BLUE.

If they put the intank in, you will be OK if you leave the truck stock. If your going bigger sticks (and or box), I too would put a helper BLUE pump with the intank. I have dad's truck set up that way, and he never see's below 15 psi. with a ez and 275's.
