Looks like there's a flurry of VP44 failures, including mine. I didn't know hot weather was a factor in killing them, and had thought they were supposed to be good for a lot more than 100,000 miles, if you kept the fuel pressure up. That's the reason I bought and installed a fuel pressure gauge several years ago.

Since they're very high priced, and it sounds like they are prone to failure, I wonder if they're still selling the exact original pumps, or if there have been upgrades over the years to make them more reliable ?? Anybody know for sure ??

The biggest problem was with the electronics board on top of the pump. They are prone to damage from heat either from lack of fuel or heat soak. There have been 2 major upgrades that I know of. The first was when Fed-Ex demanded Cummins/Bosch fix the problem. They came up with the "fed ex" electronics package that until recently was the ultimate and a huge improvement over stock. There is a newer board out now that's even better. As far as the mechanical side of the pump, that all depends on how good the rebuilder is. The CZ remans are horrible quality. I got one and it lasted 7000 miles. I wouldn't buy one from anyone who doesn't offer a year warranty and the latest electronics.
