Yeah, that's what they sound like. It kindof catches you by surprise when the 3 cyl kicks in.

Reminds me of those isuzu box trucks. I expected my high idle to kick in this morning since it was 28*, but it never did. How cold does it have to be?

Less than 20 from what I've seen. I've yet to see the 3 cyl thing, but I live in Va.

Hey TJ- did cleaning your sensor change if/ when high idle kicks in?

I have had it kick in. It has to be around 0-10* I think. It has to meet some parameters before it will kick in. It starts on 6 but then kicks down to 3.

UM...somewhere its outlined......This is how i understand it:

</=32* F -- High Idle at 1200ish
</=15* F -- High Idle and cuts off 3 cyls.

UM and this ex-Texas boy knows what it will do when you just hit the key cold at 15*.........UM...yeah....dont do it......... Fish out of water here.......old habits die hard!

Its to get EGT's up in the cyl. The colder the engine is, the less compression it will produce at start up. This is bad for an engine that runs solely on compression! This means it wont start (OR sound like crud if it does! ) without some help. Not to mention that your oil is thicker and dragging all the internal components down when cranking......and the Cold reduces Batt output.....

The intake heaters cycle to make sure there is a hot shot of air that can start the combustion process. Then the high idle is to get the pistons moving faster to get EGT's up (Doing more work in the same amt of time that a low idling engine would). AND when it gets really cold, it cuts 3 cyls at the same RPM to increase load on the engine to keep the EGT's up. Remember its sucking in that cold air that is sucking the heat out of the whole process.....This is the reason for intake heaters and the high idles.....
