Question 3 cyl/high idle warm up

As posted last week, I went in to have my ECM re-flashed and the high idle feature enabled.

All went well exept for the re-visit to enable the feature. Geeze when are these "techs" going to get it???

I had suggested he read the TSB before to make sure. "ya ya ya.... said it enabled "automatically" hmmmmmm....

Actually he was more interested in what was plugged into the ECM or if the VP wire was tapped as he pointed to the gauge trio. I had removed my EZ just in case

I have to give him credit though, he was able to update the speedo to match the new 285's (up from 245) Rev's/mile was all that he needed.

It was -9 c this morning, well within the high idle parameter but border line for the 3 cyl drop. I fired her up and waited for the RPM to ramp up......nothing.

Just for giggles, I thought I would pull the EZ and try again.

Presto!! 1200 rpm ramp up in 45 seconds. Go figure . Plugged it back in nadda.

It would seem to me that the EZ interferes with this feature (duh) I'm sure there are many EZ's running with this enabled, what gives? . Is there a fix or mod?? and I don't mean sticks and strings to hold the skinny pedal.

Sure would like to hear from folks that have this beat.

I enabled my 01 last year (flash not required for mine) and when I was in Idaho for a ski weekend it was -17. Of course being curious I left the block heater cord unplugged one night and started the engine in the am and mine went into the 3cyl warm up mode and I had my ez edge plugged in. If I plugged in the block heater it would not go into the cold idle mode.

Just courios, how much did it cost on your 1998.5. Also does it warm up that much faster (sometimes takes forever when not plugged in. I hate scraping Frost!!) Is there a noticable difference in idle fuel consumed? I am thinking about doing the same thing next week. Thank you.

Smokin'

Like to help you out with some "real experiance" info but I can't until I get the darn thing to work. Like you I don't like to wait. I figure if she's gonna idle for 10 minutes then she might as well "work" and warm up faster.

I'm gonna let things be until we get some real cold weather and see then.

As to cost, it's listed as 0.5 hrs on the TSB and that's what I was charged. The tech is a friend of family and did the speedo recal while he was in there.

The ".5" is warranty time. Some shops charge the full hour for this.

Why was the flash not required for your truck?

I had this flash done on my 99 and it works great even with the Comp Box on it. It did kill my fuel mileage when I had it done so Beware of that one. I lost about 3 miles per gallon when they did the re-flash. It does make a huge differance in warm-up time, but it does have to be real cold for it to engage. When it kicks in the first time, just know your truck is going to sound sick, so don't get paranoid.

It's already there for us with 2001's and 2002's.

It's just disabled and needs to be enabled.

I've tried twice to have it enabled, both times without success.

Maybe this upcoming oil change I'll try again,
maybe the techs will have had some more experience and get it right this time.

Does that include ALL 2001's, or just the 2001.5's and up?

Not sure.

TSB is dated September 2001, so that would lead me to believe all 2001's need to be flashed then enabled.

I think it depends on if you've been flashed for anything else since 9-01, as that flash would include the update,
then you'd just need to have it enabled.

Aside from 99 cummins, has anyone pre 2001 had this done and egaging successfully with an Edge box??

This has me in a twist. Just want to know if I'm chasin' a ghost.

Mailed Edge tech support. Nice people, didn't really get a straight answer....but they did offer to check out the box. I think I might take them up on it.

I think that only 2001.5 and up have the program. I want to get mine done to but I have drums in the back so I think that I will also need a reflash. Another thing that is holding me back in the possibility of lost mileage.

how cold does it need to get before the cold weather idle kicks in? I bought mine used and don't know if it has been enabled or not. I have over 166k on it and plans for an Edge EZ or Comp in the future, but I am curious about the idle being enabled already. Winter is coming fast, and I have a hunting trip in the northern woods of Wisconsin coming up. No outlets there, and potentially deep freezing temps miles from anything.

If any flash has been done to your truck there will be a sticker on the ECM module on the fire wall under the hood or on the support cross bar in front of your radiator, or in some cases both. these will tell what flash on what date was done. They are required by law to be affixed by the dealer doing them.

I think I'm gonna have it enabled just for fun and see what it's like. Why does it kill 3 cylinders? You'd think it would warm up quicker with all 6 running. Or does running on 3 put more a load on the engine?
