Running only 3 puts a load on the engine.

The 3 firing have to push the other 3 around, not to mention the compression in those 3 cylinders.

In the winter this is a fantastic thing. I have had days when I don't give the truck time to idle long enough for it to engage and it never will get up to normal operating temp, but the next morning let it idle and within 10 minutes it's there. When it gets real cold I just let the truck run for the hour or 2 it takes to get the barn chores done at night and when the engine gets to cold I have heard it kick on and off then to.

For the record, my 2001.5 did not have the feature and needed to be reflashed and enabled. I had it done last January and since I had it done, it got cold enough a couple times for the high idle feature to kick in, but hasn't ever gotten cold enough for the 3 cyl feature to engage. It does make me wonder about excessive cylinder wear on the 3 cyl that are running "dry" with no fuel to help lube them. Also, does the ECM alternate which 3 cylinders are shut off? or is it the same 3 cyls everytime?

Mech,

Don't know about the alternating 3 pack, but not burning fuel in the three would increase lubricicity.

Fuel is not the lube agent (although it contributes to some extent) it's the pan oil.

Without fire in the hole, the oil is not burned and in fact the cylinder wall becomes "wetter"

I'm sure other opinions are out there, my 2 cents.

Does the reflash effect the mileage any? I have heard both ways and I was wondering if there were a certain reason for it.

I did not see any milage changes..... I've gotten as high as 19.7 with the truck in my sig running empty on the highway.

Any updates???

Seems like this thread just kinda died out. I had my cold engine idle feature turned on and it didn't work. So I tried disconnecting my EZ, and sure enough it ramped right up to 1200 rpms. Wasn't cold enough to have the 3cyl run feature kick in though. I then tried reconnecting the EZ and as I expected on the mornings that it should have kicked in, it didn't. This has me really scratching my head for answers because when the engine is not under any load and hench not building any boost, it's my impression that the truck shouldn't even know that the EZ is there allowing the computer to work correctly and ramp up the Idle speed.

So with all that babbling out of the way, does any one have any answers as to why it works for some people with an EZ and not for others??? Maybe someone who's got an inside track at Edge products could chime in?? I really would love to have this feature work for me when I could use it, but I don't want to have to remove the EZ for the winter. I'm cold and my truck is too!

Mine works fine with the EZ connected. It does NOT work if the truck has been plugged in for even a couple of hours. Did you try the APPS reset just for the heck of it?

Bluedeviltorque,

I posted success with this back awhile ago.

Try an APPS re-set. This fixed mine and it has worked perfectly ever since.

I don't think this is an EZ issue. You are correct in the ECM doesn't know the EZ is there until 3 psi boost.

Not sure if it's the actual APPS needing a reset or if the procedure sets up a condition that takes care of the problem. All I know is it worked for me.

Especially this morning. -30c and the flippin' block heater didn't do it's thing.

Next little thing to tend to.

Maybe you could just disconnect the cables and drain the system and try without the APPS reset. That would narrow things down a bit for others.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply's. I'll try the reset, I always do one about every 4-6months but haven't done one since before I had the high idle feature enabled. I would be awsome if that works .

Talking IT WORKED!!!!

First of all, thank you amartinson and Tazman for suggesting the APPS reset. It was freaking cold here this afternoon (6 degrees), even by Connecticut standards when I went out to disconnect the batteries and reconnect them 45 minutes later. But much to my pleasure I gave it a start and after a few moments... rpm's ramped up to 1200 as smoothly as ever.

Next is to wait till tomorrow morning and hopefully I get the rare (thankfully) chance to hear the 3cyl warm up kick in. Hopefully its not as painful sounding as some people describe it to be.

this is going to sound dumb, but is there a sure fire way to know if you have the "high idle" feature and if it's turned on...mine in a 2001.5....
