Upgrades

Last Tuesday we installed my pod and gauges. Upon cranking the truck noticed I had very little fuel pressure, 6 psi at idle. Decided to check on getting a new lift pump, as my RV275's had arrived. Ended up getting the lift pump under warranty. on Thursday installed the new lift pump (long story) Injectors and the Edge EZ. Started at 6:30 PM went home at 9:15 PM. This included two test drives. Very noticable power increase. My driving is 30miles to work on the hwy. then city driving during the day (anywhere from 2-15 miles per day) back home and a ride through the pastures in the evenings. My fuel milage was averaging 16.8 mpg, now it is up to 20.3 mpg. Hard to believe that the fuel milage goes up that much. It is also hard to believe that Dodge has these engines so detuned.

Re:Upgrades

If you're useing the computer for mileage, it is way off with injectors or box added. (not that accurate stock either)

This is one of the signs to the dealer that you've futzed with stuff.

If figureing by hand, that is a great increase, I've heard of 2mpg increase, but over 4 .

phox

Re:Upgrades

I don't have injectors but when I added my EZ I noticed about a 1-2mpg increase. I think if I could keep my foot out of it, it may get a little better...but that's no fun ;D

Re:Upgrades

We've been seeing an average gain of 1.5 with an EZ, and 1 with RV275s. I did have 2 98.5 autos who gained 5 mpg (imperial gallons. Closer to 4 MPUSG), but these were early release trucks that were suffering with extremely poor fuel mileage caused by a reflash early in the life of the truck. Anyone else remember this? Early 98.5s had great power, and fuel mileage almost equal to the 12 valves they replaced, and after a certain reflash, mileage dropped in the toilet and power went wayyyyy down. No matter how many reflashes Chrysler did after that, the trucks never came back. The EZs seem to help these trucks out alot for some reason.

Rod

Mine has a sticker for a reflash or something. Will check this over the weekend and also look at engine plate to determine date of manufacture. Mine is getting over 17 mpg since I took my slide in camper off and lost my muffler. Could it be one of the ones you're talking about?

CR

Re:Upgrades

With the BullyDog 8's I'm using, my MPG readout says I'm getting 25-26mph. It's about 10 MPG off. With each fueling increase, it gets further off. I speculate that the ECM has been precalculated for the fuel flow of the stock injectors at given RPM and boost levels to make the calculation.

The 2 trucks that I've experienced were February 1998 builds, I believe. The customers were both among the first to have 24 valve trucks in Saskatchewan. I'd track them down and ask them to check for me, but neither of them own the trucks anymore. One had so many other problems, he switched to a Duramax. The other is driving an 02 now.

As for the reflash, my guys at the Dodge dealer couldn't tell me what it was for. I don't know if they didn't want to tell me, or if they weren't privy to the info. I have heard several unconfirmed rumors that it is was something to do with emissions. Sorry I can't be much more help than that.

Rod

Re:Upgrades

I rather think it was this recall
It seems that they corrected timing (for NOx) and max. fueling ( for HC)

Maybe some Cummins dealer could reflash the ECM with some proper code ???
AlpineRAM

Re:Upgrades

I bet you're right on that Alpine. Mine was supposed to have this reflash as well, but hasn't. Guess I won't be registering it in CA, not that I'd want to. So much for the 4 mpg increase. But I'd rather have the mpg I get now than have the reflash done and the mpg go down. Guess I'll have to come up with some other excuse for getting an EZ. :

CR

Re:Upgrades

The initial attempts at reflashes by DC were TERRIBLE.
They had someone probably guessing at what the soulitions were for some of the reflashes like what Alpine RAM has mentioned.

I had a 98 and it was a turd from the get go.
One of the very first in Canada and what a pc o crap.

Now I am getting 100 miles per gallon or better since the truck is in pieces until tormorrow.
