Update on Gauge Install Problems

First of all I want to thank all of you that gave me advice this weekend with the gauge install I did. Ill update you on what was wrong.

Pyrometer: Someone mentioned that once I powered it up the gauge would zero out and start working. This a.m. I went out and disconnected power and the thermocouple leads from it and then hooked up the power leads and plugged the fuse back in. It zereoed out, so I reconnected the coupler leads and it works perfectly. 400 @ idle, 700 cruising in OD.

FP gauge: Turns out I had hooked this up correctly the very first time. Came off the inlet fitting on the VP-44 with some -4an to the isolator, then to the guage. The reason it kept reading 0 psi is because my lift pump was totally shot. I took it to a shop this a.m. and they hooked up their gauge and it read zero also. So I call the dealer and tell them that I need them to check my pressure today and repair if necessary. They tell me they can't see me until Friday. So I tell them that I have zero fuel pressure and if in fact my lift pump is shot that by the time I drive the truck around all week, that they should probably go ahead and order a new injection pump because that probably wasn't going to make it much longer. Since they both were under warranty they must have decided to save about 2700 dollars and get my truck in today. Good news is they fixed it in about 2 hours with new lift pump. My gauge now reads 14 at idle 12 at cruise and 9-10 at WOT. Funny though I would have thought that I would at least get 1-2 psi out of it even if the lift was dead. I could even hear it run. BTW the dealer was very good to work with, they fixed it promptly and no hassle about warranty coverage. Told me they wished more guys would put gauges in, saves them money I'm sure.

Anyway, thanks again for all of the advice, maybe someday I can offer some.

Cole

Re:Update on Gauge Install Problems

Many a man has checked his fuel pressure, on a truck that runs, and found out there was 0 fuel pressure. I was one of those. I could hear the pump run also, and when I hooked up the temporary fuel pressure gauge to test it I got zero PSI. I then tried putting the plug back in the filter housing so I could take it to the dealer but I disturbed the vacuum and she wouldn't run again until she got a new pump.
The VP44 will generate a little vacuum, and if there are no air leaks in the fuel system it may run indefinitely with a bad lift pump, until it burns up the VP44. :'(

Chris
