my trucks getting all the body work done here soon. and i want you guys opinion on if i should just use paint or should undercoat it. i have heard that undercoating is bad cause water gets behind it and stores back there. what do you guys think. good paint or undercoat. what did you use when you did your truck or would use.

Undercoat it it an oil and power wash it and undercoat it again before the next salty winter is my call.
I use bar and chain oil with a little diesel fuel to thin it down if I want it to soak into the seams.

i spray used motor oil under my trucks for winter to keep the salt away. the thing im trying to ask is. my trucks getting 100% redone the body the guy is gonna paint the frame and all. but when hes down there should i just let him paint under the cab or should i get him to undercoat it. under the cab it has surface rust and i want to touch everything all up make it look nice. but i heard bad things about undercoating

A good coat of paint is hard to beat, but it has to be prepped right, no oils or contamination and sanded everywhere for good tooth so the paint will adhere. Then go back to oiling it...

The undercoating stuff seems to never adhere to 100% of everywhere..

Honestly, I was going to take off the flaps and running boards when I bought my truck, but after seeing how well preserved the rockers and door bottoms were I left them on.

POR 15 is your friend

Hi, while I'm a newbie to this forum I have been through restorations of off road and older cars before. you want the body guy to use POR 15 on the frame. It is a paint and it bonds to the metal and neutralizes rust. It is pretty much a standard in the frame off car restoration world. Stop Rust with POR-15® - We Know What Permanent Means!

Yes, I have used it myself in the restoration of a 1980 Toyota Landcruiser which saw 80% off road, 20% DD duty and may well use it on the '99 2500 4WD diesel I just picked up. Good luck.
