which turbo to use?

What is the best single turbocharger to support 400-450 hp? How would an hx 40 do? Or a hx 50? I have seen slot of people run the ht3b with a twin setup. Would this work as a single? Also I cant afford to spend a tremendous amount of money. What do you all think will be the best?

A KSB-1 would fit your needs perfectly. Fast spoolup and cool egt's for the 400-450hp crowd. 50psi is pretty much the max on the stock headgasket without studs.

All except for the 1600.00 price tag (KSB-1)! For a cheap upgrade........HX-40 would work...but its flawed...weak shafts and such. AND not all that cheap if you get down to it! HT3B, KSB1, Phat Shaft...this would be the best choices......but not under your requirements. For about 1200.00...you can get a good huffer with a WG to keep it around 40-45....your HG should hold if you dont get to carried away! BUT every truck is differant......Look at it this way...if you pop you HG.....get a new thicker one with head studs...and never worry about it again.....unless you want to go bigger!! haha.....

turbo

If you have the fuel you could run a H2E or a HX50 if you have a smaller exhaust housing like a 16 or 17 no bigger. I have a H2E and it runs 50 PSI and I love the turbo. It lights about 1800 RPMs.

Will either if these turbos bolt straight up? The H2E is used on the L10 Cummins right? I may be able to get my hands on a decient used one. Is there any danger with going with a used one? I can go through it replace maintence parts but I don't want to get into big money repairing a used turbo. If everything spins free and feels tight will it be ok? Also the exhaust outlet on these will be a true 4" correct?

Thanks for all the help so far.

abarnar 1,
you can always upgrade your hx35, such as a htt 60mm compressor assembly, and a bigger exhaust housing. It works well for my set up.

H2e

The H2E and the HX50 were on the L10's they do have a 4 inch exhaust outlet and if they spin good and appear in good shape you should be fine if they have the right housing on them. you can either get a direct bolt on housing made for these chargers, use an adaptor plate like i do, or there is a manifold that you can buy that will work with the chargers and bolt right to the head.

This H2E has a 17cm housing and is non wastegated. I know 17 will do good with egt's which is what i want more than anything, but I dont want a super slow spool. How slow will this thing be? Also what do you guys thing about it being nonwastegated? How much boost will it build like this? I dont really want to go over 40-45 psi and put my head gasket in danger.

Also curious about the adapter plate Desel Dan asked about.

turbo

any machine shop can make the adaptor its just about an inch thick using allen head screws that sink up inside the plate to mount it to the manifold and then your turbo just mounts to the plate with bolts threading in the plate. you should have no problem with your head gasket until after 50psi, i am setting on exactly 50psi with no failure yet all factory. It all depends what done to your truck to determine your psi, it takes some fuel to make 50psi mine comes in pretty fast I think. And for the manifold I have heard of them but not actually layed my eyes on one yet. I will keep my eyes open
