Turbo psi vs head gasket
#16
There really isn't a magic number here..... We use 40# as a max on a stock head. We push that number up to 45#-50# when running studs. If you o-ring + studs 80# is no problem. All of this assumes the engine was completely warmed up prior to pushing the engine.
Problem here is that each truck is different. I have seen trucks blow HG at 30# on the stock setup yet others push 60#. The best we can do is take preventive steps.... Studs are a good start but o-rings are better.

I think stock heads are kind of like stock auto trannys..... major variations from one to another. They all do the job at stock power levels, which is what they are designed for, but some heads come from the factory sealing better than others, due to variations in how flat/level they are when manufactured.
I lost mine at under 40 psi... but it was from a teen age type, 'high testosterone' moment ...... playing hard before the T-stat had opened and before the engine was fully warmed up. (Another great point made by Doug).
