I will have to change the info.

As for your setup the External mounted wastegate we now have will give you better results. It's best to keep the drivepressure balanced. But their is another way we can use your KS Housing though. Give me a ring...

Jet pilot, Ofcourse we both agree that each truck / owner is different and there is 1000 different setups and different results from most of them.

When you say the PDR40 spools faster I assume you are comparing one of fastest spooling versions of the PDR40 compared to the standard B-1 and Not a KwikSpool B-1 or the Fastest version of the B-1 the KSB-1B.

In realworld driving tests I have yet to see a hx40 that will lower egts as much as the B-1 and have less lag.

And when it comes to Dyno HP #'s. I Have to admit I get most of my Info from A 8-10% Grade Pulling 12K to 18K and watching the gauges and from the Many different CTD owners that are all trying something different. From what I've seen the B-1's make more HP with Lower Egt's when in the Average HP ranges 350 to 450 hp of most of the daily Drivers / Towing rigs.
Now if your are talking about the high HP ranges you have ran on Dynos. I think you will be suprised when you run a properly wastegated B-1 against the HX40's which must be wastegated to stay in one piece when used for High HP runs. And I have never tried for the "King Of The HP" But most BigDogs are running Nitros/Propane.....

A nonwastegated B-1 Or any turbo I have seen with a comparable size housing restricts HP due more and more to Drive Pressure the higher you get. But with most turbos you have to wastegate them before they overspeed and blowup.

The Wastegate options now available for the B-1's are going to make a improvement in their Top end performance. And the KSB-1B is the "Kwikest" Spooling B-1 sofar.

It would be very interesting to test The KSB-1B against the PDR HX40.... And larger housing B-1's using the wastegates against the larger housinged Hx40's.....

I would love to see how they stack up in Real World on the street tests.... Spoolup, EGT reductions, HP & Torque #'s Smoke levels, Boost levels and let's not forget Durability/Reliability....

And when we start finding ways to make the CTD breath better with Better Intercoolers, Headporting and intakes etc that the high boost levels and CFM level attainable with the B-1's will be better utilized. I think that with a intercooler that is less restrictive and capable of removing more heat we could use the 60psi boost levels for more HP.

The B-1's are not yet at their best. More HP, Driveability etc to come

And I can't wait to see how the K-45's stack up??? 8)

Also I hated the OIL and Transmission wars so before things really get rollin I think I will go back to workin and let everyone else hash things out!

Re:Which Turbo?

I`d like to add some imput, I recently changed over a PDR HX40 to the Kwikspool B1. And theres NO way that a 40 can compete with the B1 for everyday driving and towing,
I don`t race my truck or truckpull so Im not going to offer advice on that. But in real world driving the B1 spools alot quicker and stays efficent much longer while yeilding higher boost and lower EGTs.I also have no worries about granading it.
Look at it this way. if anyones looking into purchasing a turbo, do what you would with the fueling boxes.Skip over the EZ and get a Comp. Save your self some money and get the KS-B1 the 1st time.
Danny ;D

Re:Which Turbo?

KwikKurt,

How would the B-1 (KSB-1B?) compare to a stock HX35, or 35/40 hybrid, with a non wastegated 16cm2 exhaust housing? I know results will vary between applications; I am just looking for an estimate. With my setup, I am running at 40+psi, and aprox. 1500*. Cruising temps range between 700*- 775* at 70mph, and about 825*-900* up every hill (empty). I haven’t done any real testing since some recent upgrades. I am looking for reduced cruising, and overall temps, with good spool-up. I am also considering an HX-40. I do more highway driving than city, and do tow some, but not extremely heavy. I'd like to tow without smoke and EGT issues. What do you think?

Mike
Re:Which Turbo?

Mike, For your 1st gen one of the K-45's would work great. The -4 Turbine wheel using the ex3 housing will give you faster spool then you have now and the Compressor wheel is as big as the B-1. This also would be a direct bolt no exhaust mods required. The ex4 housing would give you even faster spool and lower cruise egt's but it requires a 4in hx40 style Down pipe flange. You can also use the KSB-1B ex4 your power levels are plenty to spool this up. But if you are not planning on Nitros/propane bombing then it would be overkill.

I have built many 35/40 hybrids and KwikSpooled Hx40's for the first gens. They work great for the expected power levels of bombed first gens. The K-45 line has bigger compressors and are built with the B-1's brand /style componets.

For more specifics I need to know more info about your truck and driving habits..... Like Altitude, intake and exhaust upgrades, current horse power levels

Thanks for you interest.... Kurt Yardley

Re:Which Turbo?

Thanks for the detailed reply Kurt. I am unfmiliar with the turbos you are discussing, so it is a bit confusing. What is the difference between the ex3 and ex4 housings? Why does the ex4 spool faster, smaller? I still have the factory 3" downpipe because 4" is difficult to find for a first gen. So, I wouldn't mind replacing the 3" with a 4" with proper flange, to match the rest of the 4" exhaust system if I went with the ex4. Is there a big difference between the KSB-1B and the K-45? What kind of wastegates do these turbos use?

I cannot say the power level because I have not dynoed in a year. It’s hard to guess as my 35psi boost gauge now pegs in second gear. It was making 32psi in 5th when at 257rwhp. I am going to dyno this spring though. I do not plan on using propane, nitrous, or going too much farther as far as power is concerned. Most of my driving is between 2200-2500ft. I usually drive pretty easy, but like to GO too! As far as other mods that could help decide: Custom intake with big aFe filter, 4" exhaust, everything ported except head, advanced timing, honed POD injectors, tuned pump, hybrid H1C/40 turbo. I hope this is what you are looking for.

Sorry for asking first gen questions in the 24V forum.

Thanks for your help. ;D
Mike

Re:Which Turbo?

Mike, It does get confusing [undecided]. I am really starting to have fun lately due to all the recent choices we have added. I can really customize the Turbos for each customer.

The Ex-4 is the smallest housing I currently have out of R&D. We machine the housing to fit either of the Turbo lines the K-45's or KSB-1's. It is nonwastegated and the Exhaust outlet will accept the 4" OD Flange.

This 4" flange is the same one that everyone uses to make the Hx40 Downpipes. You can build your own down pipe easy with just the flange and some 4" exhaust pipe and two 4" Tight radius elbows. If you need I am happy to send you Email pics.

The Ex3 is the next larger size of housing we offer for
either turbo line. Even though it is larger it has the 3" OD exh outlet that is common on your stock turbo (H1c) and most Hx35's. This makes the turbos as a direct bolt in and accepts many exhaust brakes.

The B-1's & KSB-1's are still available with 4.7" OD Dual wastegated housing. This is the housing that we are developing a Bolt on actuater for if needed for Higher HP users.

Now if you are starting to catch on some.. Let me throw in a twist we are going to try to machine the EX4 outlet to also fit the 3" OD flange brakes and your stock down pipe.

As for your KSB-1B and the K-45 comparision question The compressors are close to the same.... and that were every thing changes. The KSB-1B uses the Smaller B-1 Turbine wheel and the smaller housings. It has a BIG shaft and is the fastest spooling of the B-1's The K-45's can be setup in many different combinations. Generally speaking they use lighter shaft and componets and can be extremely fast. Faster even than some Hx35's. They have stood up very well to R&D and are less expensive than the B-1's.

the Wastegate question opens up even more confusion in what's available or needed depending on different truck confiqurations....... You might want to call or Email for more specifics....... Thx Kurt

Re:Which Turbo?

It sounds like we need to have a turbo dyno off. Someone need to try all of the above as well as Piers newest Super turbo HX-50 Rocket. It needs to be a 12 vlave w/ 4K GSK so that we can see what it will do at higher RPMs

I know of just the truck (a hot 12v) that has tried all the turbos (HX-35, PDR HX-40, regular HX-40, B1, KSB1) and so far has been happiest with the PDR 40 by far. Spoolup on this truck and my truck (mods in sig below) is by far much faster with the PDR than even the KSB1. Not saying the B1 isn't tough, but I know some people have had bearing issues, and I don't know of anyone who has blown a PDR40 when leaving the wastegate alone (Blocking the wastegate has blown a few). This 12V is currently breaking in a new HX50/55 hybrid by *censored* and the first impressions are impressive. Hopefully some numbers will be available by the weekend.

Re:Which Turbo?

Lets throw a truck at ya and see what turbo would work best.
a 180hp pump dodge ctd with a 5spd 370hp injectors and putting around 400-450hp or 350-400hp to the ground. Pulls trailers about 3 to 4 times a week with a medium load. Lives in hilly country but wants to sled pull 3-5 times a year.
What turbo would you recommend to this truck and what estimated price for this turbo?
DM01 ;D

And one of those was breaking 700 HP on dozens or maybe hundreds of Dyno and 1/4 mile runs. And last I checked that Turbo is still out there making boost. That one was JetPilots and we actually replaced his bearings twice. The first set went along time (1+ year?) We would have to ask the HP king to be sure.

The second set failed I think immediately. What happend?? Well I can only guess that the coatings we were trying came off. For that replacement set we installed a set of Polymer coated used bearings. Why used? That was because when you plate/coat them it makes them smaller/tighter without having to machine them first. Also sometimes used parts are better due to work hardning. Some racers will build up a engine, trans and rear axle then drive for X amount of miles then tear them down and coat almost everything with polymers. Then they rebuild them often with the parts tolerenced even tighter with workharding and they have super low friction and much improved lifespans.

Top Fuel Drag Racers have used this in their rear axles and have gone from a Rearaxle rebuild every few runs to running a whole season with the same parts then only recoating them for the second season.

My thoughts were that to that date the only thing I had replaced on the B-1's was a few sets of bearings. If the coated bearings wear longer then I will install them in all the Turbos or atleast the ones used for competition. I have another set of the coated bearings in a KSB-1 that I was using for R&D . Last time I checked it is still on a truck. When it is time I will see how many miles it has and check for wear. I am not sure why one set failed and the other is ok. As more of them get enough use that they need freshend up we will try some more coated ones.

We are always compiling data to help with our R&D / Product development. There is nothing as good as real world testing. We will soon be sending out a survey to find out how many miles, at what horsepower and opinion of overall performance on each customers truck...
L8tr Kurt
Re:Which Turbo?

Not knocking the B-1 on its dependability Kurt, but I'm just pointing out that the issue has come up before as you admitted in your post:

My thoughts were that to that date the only thing I had replaced on the B-1's was a few sets of bearings.
