TSL-17 install (diesel aux heater)

I picked up a Webasto TSL-17 for a pretty decent price ($750 + GST).

Has anyone installed one in their RAM? Good location? I'm thinking either in the engine compartment, on the frame rail driver side or between the frame rail and the body further back on the truck. Any hints?

This should be sweet for winter... it outputs 5 kWs of heat (equivalent to 17 block heaters). I plan to rig it up to a timer that will switch it and, optionally, the blower on to heat the engine, heat the cab, and defrost the windows.

And hence... the ultimate ski truck! Muwahahaha.

Speaking of which, the suggested diagram places the Webasto in parallel with the heater core, I assume this will distribute heated coolant reasonably evenly between the engine and the heater core?

I can't speak specifically to the Webasto, but with my Espar, it obviously circulates the coolant in one direction. Depending on how you plumb it, you can have it so the engine gets heated first, or the cab gets heated first. I've got it so it heats the engine first. If it is in similar dimensions to my D5, then on the frame rail at the front of the cab would be a good place. I don't know all the hardware that comes in with your kit, but mine came with just enough heater hose to make it to and from the engine/heater core to the heater, and the intake hose was a good length so I could mount it to where the lift pump would be. I had to get an extra section of exhaust hose so it would get to the back of the cab. If you get a timer with yours, it will probably be able to hook it into the heating system. When coolant temp reaches 30 degrees on the exit of the pump, it will turn on the fan inside.

Good deal on that heater though. My Espar was over twice that.

Was the Webasto new? Where did you get it for that price?

That is a good price. I just bought the Espar D5 with 7 day timer and external mount fuel pump and water pump. It was 1050 shipped and was brand new. The guy I got it from us Greg landuyt he is a member on the TDR and is the owner of lubrication specialists.
The Espar D5 has more heat output than the one webasto TSL-17 heater.
As for mounting mine, I have moved the passenger battery and moved the aircleaner to where the battery was and the Espar will get mounted on the firewall next to the heater core lines. I wanted to mount the Espar in the engine bay because I have read on here that mounting it on the frame rail, will cause the heater to get all of the road muck on it and then they have a tendency to break faster.
