trany cooling opinion needed
well my trany doesnt run HOT but at teh end of long hill pulling 6-7k lbs (see tow set up in pics in my gallery) it will hit 210-220 or so but quickly fall on the down grade. flat ground it runs right 180-190. i want to make this trany last and all it has on it is a fairly large cooler in front of the rad. now my question is which would be a better next cooling purchase?
1. Buy the mag hytec DD trany pan for my auto trany for 265.
2. Purchace another cooler with its own fan to mount under the bed in the factory location, total cost probably close to teh Pan.
which do you think would provide more cooling for the cost?
thanks. jiMMy

The cooler/fan combo will be much more effective than the pan. Not much extra heat transfers out of the finned pan than the stock pan, and extra fluid won't keep it cooler, it will just take a little longer to heat up and cool down. Summit and Jeg's both have cooler/fan combos for somewhere around $250.

I think a larger cooler up front, large, round tubes, not plates. How long since the filter has been checked? You said you were having cooling issues too? You might consider bypassing the heat exchanger, being in California, you probably don't have many "cold' starts anyway, to make use of any benefit. It's a good clogging spot as well.

I would go with the xtra cooler. the pan wont do diddly IMO. My 93 has both factory coolers and it really helps. dont forget runnin flat you dont want it to cold either, its said 170/180 is optimum for correct fluid temp and operations.

Stick around this weekend, I'll post some pics of a complete tranny job. I am swapping mine out for a X (gotta keep you guys in suspense, only MnTom knows ) transmission, and am relocating my aux cooler from the front to underneath the bed, as well as redoing my tranny lines in aluminum tubing. Just pick up an electic fan off ebay. I got an S blade type from a buddy who was dumpster diving, and it flows some serious air! I am mounting it underneath the bed on a switch. I am doing it for plowing, because the front end doesn't get hardly any airflow and the bed is a lot cooler than the radiator! One thing I wil recommend is the flex-a-lite cooler. I got their 2nd largest one and it uses 1/2" tubes instead of the puny 3/8" tubes on others, and the best part is inside it has a little star with fins that direct fluid to the outside of the tubes and closer to the cooling fins. It lowered my max temps by about 20 degrees. I could peg my 250* gauge if I pushed it hard, now it only gets to about 230 or so, the fan under the bed should get me cooler yet.
