transmission Choice

I am going to replace my tranny in a few months and have heard of two main choices DTT and sun coast which is a better tranny or is there better ones. what about a tranny shop rebuilding one and making it stronger? I talked to a tranny shop and they said they could build one for 3000 that i would not be able to break (doubt that) DTT trannys get pretty expensive.

well.. you can have your tranny shop install DTT/Suncoast/ATS/Goerend compenents.. if you wanna go that route.. a good Valve Body and Torque Converter should tide you over with what mods you have now.. and then when you get more and more.. just start adding billet .. (Flex plate, shafts).. I'd go with DTT i think they are pretty decent on prices..

then you should go with at least all billet except maybe the intermediate and output shafts.. Gonna be pricey no matter what route you go.. just start calling around.. see what each company can do for you.

Keep looking, (Georand Bros), I have heard no bad about these guys, My next one will be theres, because I am sure my Suncoast is on its way south. You need to talk to different companys, get a feel for them and check there warranty. I was told a few months ago when my Suncoast converter was acting goofy that Suncoast only warrantys them for 12 months now. I was told when I bought it that it was covered for 3 years. Long story short version= took truck in they said they would change the converter this time since it was fifteen months since I bought the converter. But that is IT>> no more warranty.. which is just fine they put a low stall conveter in two months ago, and now with a trailer on it seems like the stall speed is around 2000 rpm....

If you stop at 500 hp (a big if) and if you are not power braking (boosted launches) at the drag strip, I do not think you need billet shafts. This will save you two grand +/-.

Do a full rebuild from one of the big three and never look back. I'm at 90,000 on my DTT and love it. It has never so much as hiccupped once as I climbed to over 600 hp! And it was built to handle the 350-400 hp I said was all I planned on ever having

I did add billet shafts at 75,000 miles on the tranny and everything inside looked good to go another 200,000+ miles!

Sun Coast Quality issues

I'm on my 3rd Sun Coast valve body since rebuilding the trans just under 3 yrs ago.

It's a lifted 4x4 w/35" tires, but i don't tow or haul any loads. I may do a little light off-roading once in a while, but nothing that would be hard on a trans!

They may have quality issues and don't know how to solve them and still remain competitive.

I had over 99k miles on my last DTT and I pulled hard and drive hard that truck was at 500hp and 1000fpt.

I am 99% sure I'll be with DTT on my '06 as well, NADP is getting some good press but when I talked to them they didn't have much confidence in thier east coast installers which means a lot to me! I don't want to have to worry about service/warranty issues that require me to get the truck/tranny 1000's of miles.

My 2 cents. Good Luck!

I've got about 10k on my DTT and it's held up great to 5psi launches and many many standing start WOT runs at 500+hp. It's definately been the best money I've ever spent.

Dunrite is just up the road from you in the Portland area. Tony has been building performance transmissions and converters for a long time.
