The Choice

lookin at 2 trucks both 98 identical except for Color and engine. Ones a 24 and ones a 12 valve. For a daily driver stock which would be better? I understand the 12s are slow( not that i want a speed demond but there unglodly slow) Both are the same price withink 300 bucks. Im lookin to upgrade the truck to about 400-500 hp sometime in the future. I know the 12vs are cheeper but im not worried about the cost i figured if im gonna do it im ready to spend the money and kinda like the idea of being able to control the power ( 24 v comps and stuff) Just lookin for osme opinions. Maybe some from people that have owned both and which they liked more. By the way there both in the 17,000

Re:The Choice

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm in the market for another Ram. I owned a '94 until a deer ran me off the road and I loved the old 12-valve. My neighbor has a '99 3500 dually and the engine in his feels a little stronger than mine was, as it should being it had 35 more ponies under the hood. There are plenty of mods for both and the 24 valve has been around long enough where money should not be an issue in mods. I'll think I'll go with a 24-valve plus I want the quad cab to go with it.

Re:The Choice

Oh yeah the 2 trucks are sweet trucks. And i have a 99 24v, Which is a sweatheart to drive, never a problem. theres 2 things tearing me to the 12v. One i hear they get better mileage. And 2. There off warrenty so i dont want any probs with a bad pump. But I hear the 12s are also slow trucks. So who knows. Later im gonna compare mod prices and what not gand go from there

Re:The Choice

The P-pump on the 12v can supply more fuel, be tweaked easier, and is more reliable than the VP-44. But you have to have that power all the time. Even when towing. And EGT's could become a problem. With a 24v, you can dial down the power and the smoke. Something that could come in handy while towing. If I had to do it again, I would probably get a 12v just cause it is cheaper and easier to bomb. One thing I don't like bout the 12v is the sound. They sound alright, but I think my 24 sounds FAR better IMO. I do like being able to reach down and crank up the power on my truck for a race. And when it's done, just turn it back down. Don't have to worry bout smoke or anything.

Re:The Choice

Figure out which owner took the best care of his; changed rear end fluid, and the other stuff. Get that one.

If both were equal, then add me to the list of 24V owners would would rather have the 12V technology if given a choice in a new vehicle. Better MPG, more reliable pump, more tolerant of low lubricity fuel, valve train won't gunk up as fast with extended cold weather idling, and probably some other advantages I don't know about. I was buying new and had only one choice. Compared to the competion, I still feel what I got kicks but in the durability/long life category.

Re:The Choice

I own a 08 24v and my friend owns a 98 12v. both are the same 5spd 4x4 reg cab. I don't know what you guys mean about the 12v being slow. His 12v takes off under 2k rpms my 24v waites until 2200 rpms before it comes to life. I have a 94 12v and love it. Even with 400hp it gets a lot better MPG than my 24v.
DM01

Re:The Choice

Empty, Stock, I got 20.34 and 13.7 towing(8k). With the #8 plate so far 18.8 empty, I think I'm pushing it a little, and I have't towed yet. According to TST I would lose around 1MPG Empty and gain 1-2MPG towing. We will see!! :
