I never knew they had one stock. I always used a manifold made by Auto Meter that goes inline with the cooler line coming out of the converter so it is at the hottest point. They are not to high $ and it is the best way to do it. The sender in the pan is a bad way to go it tells you the temp after it comes out of the cooler and is back in the pan. Its too late then.

Yes you can take out the factory temp sensor, and replace it with the resistor. The only problem is that now your computer doesn't know when the trans gets too hot, and your warning light won't work. I think the sensor is right next to the front cooler hot output line.

This is because by the time the fluid reaches your sending unit, the fluid would have already passed through the coolant heat exchanger and/or the front cooler, so your temperature reading will not be at its hottest point. Your gauge is reading the fluid temperature after it gets cooled. The same problem exist if you mount the sender in the pan.

This is the best solution, because your gauge will read the hottest fluid temperatures in the transmission. This is the reason the earlier models 94-95 had the factory sender mounted on this hot cooler line.
