Trans mods

The tech from Diesel Dynamics told me that I need trans mods to handle any more HP from mods like EZ Edge. He says my 99 TD 2500 with the 47RE trans can only handle 275 rhp and I have already put in stage 1 injectors. Also, How do I know whether I have the 47RE or the 48RE? He referred me to DTT but didn't say what mods are needed. What do you all think.

You have a 47 RE. The 48 didn't come out until late 2003. The tranny needs to be modded with a valve body and torque converter. The 96 and up are pretty stout without any other mods, so I have been told by the person that built my torque converter and valve body. He has my respect.

Just order the VB from DTT. After talking with Stefan over the past couple of days he said that that was the best way to go to hold the mods that I have for now. I've got the same tranny as you and it's holding the EZ/275 (should be about 300rwhp not the 260 in my sig) great. I'm ordering the VB just to make sure that when I tap the pump wire for the comp, the trans will hold it. Call DTT up and talk to Stefan or Bill. They are both very knowledgable and they both know their stuff very well and will only sell you what you need and nothing you don't.

Slugblaster,
I like how and what Diesel Dynamics recommended. Unless you are always a Sunday driver a valvebody alone will NOT be enough upgrade to your transmission to handle DD1 injectors and a EZ, especially if you plan on towing.

BigBlue,
Yah baby, tap that wire!

I have been told that by adding a tighter converter your 3 gear clutch pac will need help. Also one way is to run a 48re drum and billet aluminum apply piston with a cut pressure plate so you can run 6 frictons. First and second gear need more oil pressure. You can get a better apply lever and new kickdown servo to reduce potential leaks, also a better accumulator with more seals. Opie has a lot of insight into what is needed. I checked my oil pressure at idle and it is a lot more than stock, the reason that I have gotten by is good advice from Bill at DTT about low rpms and lockup, AFC settings, ect.
Also I was told that the reason some transmission last and some dont is the clearances the transmission were set up to at the factory. The valve body will help but I have to wonder if it will be enough, when you add a good converter, that does not wash out the torque applyed in the form of heat . I am in no form a automatic expert, I am hear to learn so please take the reins and tell it like it is so all may learn. Thanks, Jim (The Sunday driver)

DTT told me the same thing and actually steered me away from buying the converter at the same time as the VB because they said it would destroy the front pump. They also said that I could hold the Comp and 275 combo with just the VB upgrade so we'll see. I'll probably give it a week so I can feel how the tranny is gonna act with the new VB before I apply any more pressure. Boy I can't wait.

BigBlue,
What do you mean by before I applying anymore pressure? If I understand this correctly you are going to put a valvebody on that has been modified. Don't you think that it is going to be applying more pressure? IMHO your installing a temporary bandaid at best.

Jim, I am not a autotransmission specialist either. But I do make parts that tend to cater to the high performance crowd. So I guess that makes me a Professional Transmission Enthusiest. There is tons of good reading on the 47 and 48RE. The two below are from the DTT site and I think they are fitting research info for this thread.

Opie I meant no disrespect, I read your posts because I can learn from them. I knew that you make good parts and I like quality work.It just cost more and that is just the way it is. To be honist how could you inprove your product? I have been critical in the past of automatic transmissions but I really like power shift equiment.
I for sure like DDT products also, and Bill has saved me a lot of money by giving me good advice. Jim

Jim I wasn't trying to come off negative in my earlier reply. Which product/part do you feel needs to be improved upon?

As far as I know of your current line. None. The transmission overdrive housing may need some help. I had a little time to think about that, the overdrive grear ratio also seems high for the guys who tow a lot, It would cost a huge amount of money to build the grears to change that, or that is what I was told. Generally speaking the way to grow the bussiness is to add new products, ect That takes capital. Good luck on what ever you do. Thanks for the teck help Jim
