Torque Conv. lock up question.

I've heard of guys grounding out their lock up switch for the torq conv. Can anyone explain how to do this( which wires? location of wires? etc.)
Thanks,

Go to the TST web sight (http://www.tstproducts.com/) and go to the instulation instructions link and to the torque converter lock up instructions.

Try here.
There are several to choose from.

Note:
This is a quick way to toast an unmodified automatic transmission.
Use at your own risk.

I will admit, I havent yet read through the directions from start to finish. But before I do (not planning on this until its gets nicer out).
Do you have to use TST or another manufacturers setup? Or can you just wire it up, using there diagram , and a store bought toggle switch?
Thanks

A toggle switch and a lot of caution is all you need. Tranny doesn't like coming to a stop with the TC locked.
Make sure if you do the mod to pay attention to which year the instructions are for, pre 96 is different than later.

I have one on my truck and its great. I dont have any slipping or anything. It works great if you are wanting to go fast like getting on the interstate and it wont lock right away, you can hit it. Or what I like to use it for is smoke! Hense the name I gave it, "Smoke Switch" I dont keep the switch on all the time like when I'm driving in case of an emergency, I dont want it to keep pullin' me along or kill the engine. Theres a post on here somewhere that I read about a guy making one the automatically shuts off when the brake is pushed. Like what was said before, its good, just be careful and be sensible.

I bought a 2001 that has the switch. Tried it one time, and found you do need to turn it off if you plan to stop. I heard having the TC locked when shifting is bad? I bought the truck for mostly towing my Travel trailer, don't want to hurt my tranny.

A stock CTD will probably not hurt the tranny if you shift with the converter locked up but a bombed one sure will.........like it has been said, use it sensibly and there usually aren't any problems.........as a side note, I use a 3 position switch that also lets me have the converter manually unlocked. I find it very useful when towing to prolong the lock up. I have found that when the truck gets heavily bombed that you barely have to step on it to make a significant amount of torque.........this tricks the tranny into up shifting earlier than sometimes desired because TPS voltage is too low........when the load is light it is fine but when it is heavy it is not. I never use the manual lock up function anymore, just the manual unlock.

I got the install done. It works good. The wire is an orange w/black stripe. It's the one on the center port of the ECM behind the air box. I tapped into it, ran it to my dash with a toggle switch, the other side of the switch to ground. Total cost: $14.
Like Ed said, use with caution!

I have noticed that mine will not lock up if I am at a stop, then accelerate to 35mph and hold it there. If I get up to 45, it will lock up, then if I back down to 35 it holds it in lock up.

Would this switch allow me to lock up the TC when I get to 35? There is a section of road that I travel which is strictly patrolled by police and I hate to get it up to 45 just to lock the TC so the RPM will stay lower.

Other than this reason, I have no use for the switch.

Is it the same wire on an 01'?

It wont lock the TC in the first gear. It has to be in 2nd or more. If you noticed it takes off like normal, then you feel it grab when it goes to 2nd gear. I dont keep it locked off the start unless I really mash it. Its like shifting without a cluch. It really bogs the truck down alot if you go real slow, which in return makes smoke cause the turbo isnt spooled. Its good if I see a red light and I can lock it up, then just hold the rpms, then take off again without having to use much, or any brakes. Im not sure about the '01 wiring. Search for some wiring schematics and check it out. I mounted my switch right below the wait to start lights.

Yes, the switch will allow you to be locked at 35 mph.......once you turn on the switch, the clutch won't lock until the tranny shifts into 2nd gear, after that, it won't unlock until you flip the switch.

Yes, the wiring is different for your 01........I think the TST site gives instructions for most years of 2nd gens.

How about using the O/D lockout switch and letting it lock in 3rd gear?
Locking in O/D below 1700 rpm or so is really hard on the drivetrain with or without a modified transmission.
