Jamie, Can't help with the cam, but the first thought I had when I read your post was that the only thing original on your truck has got to be the hood emblem.LOL

Re:Time for a Cam

The cam is no easy task. I guess it is the single toughest upgrade you can do. No real HP gains up top, but the power will come on faster.
IMO I would have it done at Cummins or a good Cummins familiar mech. You need few specialized tools to make it happen. Lots of goodies have to come out of the way as well.
Radiator, AC condensor ( you may be able to lay it over and not disconnect it or open the system) the front cover, the rocker arms, push tubes, tappets ( with a special tool) and the old cam.

Not really for the faint of heart or first time mech. Cummins sells the tappet install and removal tool as well.

Re:Time for a Cam

Jaime,

I put a cam in my truck a few months ago and have a bunch of pictures and instructions to go along with them. I've been meaining to post everyting on here but just haven't yet.

Basically, it's not too hard of a job, but DO NOT attempt it without the Cummins tools or you'll be in for a nightmare. You have to be careful (and kinda lucky) to not drop a lifter into the pan while the cam or aluminum cylinder is out of the motor, but other than that it's just time consuming and a little tedious. If you do it, be careful when you pull the lifters up into the bores. The front lifter of every clinder has a tendency to want to get pulled up into a void in the block. You'll think that you have it in, but it's really in the wrong spot! You have to pull the bumper off, radiator out, move the A/C condenser, oil cooler, and tranny cooler to the sides, pull off the fan and then the front cover. On the top side you pull off the valve cover, rocker assemblies, and pull out the pushrods. One other trick... there's some plugs up under the cowl you can pull out to get the dowel rods down into the lifter bores to hammer into the top of the lifters. If you didn't know that they're there you'd never get 'em in. I'll try to remember to load the picture on here this weekend. Hopefully it'll help a little.

John
