That quote seems high. I don't imagine it's more than a one day job, two tops. Maybe some can recommend a shop in your area. Where are you, Oakland?

I've swapped cams on gassers in the past. Is it much different for the Cummins? Also, I said it seems high. What is the shop rate for this, if you know?

that rate is high rip rook charges around 15-18 hours for cam and springs without cutting the 3rd member and i have done a few but my tools will be in transit and i wont have a garage when i get home from this big sandbox. just wondering what mitchem on demand is saying time wise for the cam and springs.

I saw this article regarding a camshaft swap. It details the amount of work involved. They estimate 12 hours so I would say $2700 is too high.

Although, you can probably get someone to do it for 1400-2000. Again, it is no fun.

It looks like a pain. I looked at the procedure in my service manual and I would be really worried about dropping a tappet into the crankcase if I were to do this.

And here's the photo of the tech cutting the third member which brought the shop time down to 12 hours. This does not look like an easy do-it-in-the-garage kind of job.
(if I could fit the truck in the garage )
