thinkin about switching from stacks to a 5inch straightpipe

looking to hear from guys who have tried both straight pipe and stacks...

i never actually tried the straight pipe i went straight to stacks ....i love the sound but i just recently took a long trip all the way to savannah GA and back through Tennessee to Toronto and it would get to me after such a long drive cause its right behind my head

in the summer i gotta drive to tuscon AZ (thats gonna be a 38h one way trip) and i want a lil more peace and quiet but do still need a sound

will i be happier with a 5" straight?

Drew

Have you considered a single stack? With my slider closed, it's comfortable having a conversation at highway speed. I remember having to look for tunnels to go under when I had my 3.5'' straight pipe, just so I could hear it....best try driving one with a straight 4 or 5'' pipe before you commit.

I think it's all a matter of personal preference... I've never ridden in or driven a stacked Cummins... my 5" is bearable(to me) but I've never taken it for a 38 hour roadie. I can have my stereo on a relatively low volume and not really hear the exhaust when cruising. I get a drone when the engine lugs... any gear at around 1500 RPM but it's sweet music to my ears.

I know my exhaust is loud because it sets off car alarms, turns heads and garners snears from by standers.

oh i love the sound don't get me wrong and the drone going up a hill at 1500rpms is the greatest sound ive ever heard but i can tell that after 6 hours of driving its actually the noise coming from behind the back window thats gettingto me...

ps i can carry a convo and listen to music no problem too...ive had this setup for two years...but im wondering if the straight pipe underneath will get rid of that noise behind my head but still keep the powerful sound

Like I said, mine was night and day. Drive a similar truck before you start cutting...I know I wouldn't give mine up, even for a bit more audio comfort.

The 5 inch has a really good sound when you get into it. Some what deeper then the 4 inch. I will buy your stacks though if you decide to switch

I bet if there were a bit taller than the top of the cab they would be a bit more quiet.

I have 4 to 5 exhaust. It turns into 5 once it hit the rear axle. It is also straight pipe two. I took the muff of a long time ago. Have you thought of getting side pipes? A few of my friends have them and they sound good too. You can get different lengths so that you don't have to here that sound in your cab, but still here it like if you still had stacks. But i was thinking if you you would want to trade, i would. What kind of stacks are they? Bull Horns, Balone Cut, Flat Top?
They make 4,5,and also 6in side pipes. 6in is what most of my friends have.

I made my exhaust myself(4 inch), but it sounds great outside, and inside it's not loud at all. If i am really getting into the pedal, I can hear the exhaust some(taking off), but at highway speeds i love it. ONLY stuff you hear in the cab is the hum of the engine(which you will get stock),and the turbo( slightly louder than stock ). No drone/vibration or other annoying noises at all. That is one reason i never put a stack on my truck. I love how mine is on the highway. Not aggrovating at all. Sound sweet outside, and stock(other than turbo) on the inside. If i was on the highway much i probably wouldnt have even considered stacks. If i were you, and were driving long distances(like you will be), i would definatley go back to a 5 inch behind the tire. Will be much better. Thosestacks do look great on your truck, bu ti think you would like it either way. My .02.
