T46 turbo
T46 turbo
picked up a cummins T46 turbo off an 855 today. Anyone know any particulars on this turbo as far as a possible twin candidate.......assy #3018068 S/N # 941207459. compressor and turbine sizes?
had a nice converstaion with a tech at Holset. I was told the T46 is the same architecture and is comparable to the later HX55 and HX60. The H, and HX series turbos benefited from a fatter map, and a more efficient housing, though the T46 will still provide excellent results. He said they have a tendency to grenade past 60 psi, but will move in excess of 90 lb/min below that level. This guy was part of R&D for special projects in twin sequential operation in the aftermarket. He said the T46 map was not available anymore, but that a stock 35 and a 46 would work well together, providing they're not pushed past their efficiency maps. I plan to keep the pressures below 50 anyway for the time being, so I'm going to give it a whirl.
There are those that ridicule using dinosaur parts, and justifiably, there are better modern turbos to do the job. My goal all along has been to, in the lack of better words, build a junkyard wars truck. I have done a fairly good job at proving these trucks can make awesome power without breaking the bank. To date I have spent less than $100 on the engine, and most of that was the exhaust pipe and BHAF. Thanks to friends, and my field of work, I find little gems to increase power at no cost. Though we are not exactly on the cutting edge of diesel performance here in Juneau, to date there has been no one to compete with me. That goes for the sport imports as well. I have taken my fair share of alky srt4's, sti's, old school hotrods, and definitely any truck. I will keep building on the budget and see how far I can go on a C-note. Of course, though I have managed to stay cheap on the motor, the trans is another story. Unfortunately, you have to buy the ability to hold all that power!! Currently, the ATS is apart in my shop getting the full shaft treatment.....
Once I surpass what can be done on a low buck, I'll send out my marine head for rings, throw in the high swirl pistons, change out the twins for a better set, go with other than marine fuel pukers, ditch the ol' mini pump, blah blah blah. I'll have to, of course, take out a second on the house to do everything I want to as well.
Anyway, keep you posted

Now thats the type of stuff I love to hear. Good for you. Too many guys around here just buy high dollar parts just because someone else says they have to. If you are looking for a 50 psi twin set, you now have it. Your own 35 and that 46 you got. Very cool. Of course some people on here will think you are nuts because you didnt spend $4,000. These are the same type that spend $1,500 on injectors and $1,200 on a single disk organic clutch.... whatever... You go brother!!!!
